Now, the man formerly known as Jon Snow can add Order of Merlin, Third Class, Honorary Member of the Dark Force Defense League, and five times winner of Witch Weekly’s Most Charming Smile Award to the list as he prepares to trade the Westeros, The Wall, and Game Of Thrones for the Wizarding World. Yes, just days after Nicholas Hoult was confirmed as Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2 of HBO’s Harry Potter series, the cable giant has confirmed ‘a slight change due to scheduling’, and now Harington’s set to don the blonde. As a not-so-wise wizard once roughly said, “fame is a fickle friend, celebrity is as celebrity does, and scheduling conflicts really do just sneak up on you out of nowhere.” But while fans of Nicholas Hoult will doubtless be disappointed/pleased (delete as applicable) to see their ever-booked and busy fave — who’s currently hard at work on his return as Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman sequel Man Of Tomorrow — drop out of Potter, if ever there were a suitable replacement then Harington would be the one. As devout Potterheads will doubtless already be aware, Harington has actually played Gilderoy Lockhart before, voicing the outspoken and underqualified Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher in Audible’s recent all-star Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets full cast audiobook.
With Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod’s ambitious Wizarding World reboot due to take flight with The Philosopher’s Stone on HBO Max this Christmas, and filming expected to get underway on The Chamber Of Secrets before the year is through, the Potter reboot train has well and truly left the station.
