Dexter has a knack for bringing the dead back to life — its titular psychopath even miraculously survived a mortal wound in New Blood. Now that the franchise has finally returned to form with Dexter: Resurrection, we can expect to see him revisited by the tormented ghosts of his past. After leaving new casualties in his wake in Season 1, one of his victims is coming back to haunt him.
Dexter: Resurrection Season 1 saw Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) get back on the horse after cheating death in New Blood, and he immediately hit the jackpot with a fresh batch of formidable villains to dispatch. Resurrection gave Dexter a second lease on life and a shot at reconciliation with his son, but he could never outrun his past — it all came to a head in the season finale with Angel Batista’s (David Zayas) shocking death. That’s not the end for the character, apparently, based on new footage showing he survived.
Hall and Zayas were spotted filming a shared scene this week at New York’s Times Square, heavily hinting at a reunion between their characters. It’s still unclear how the series plans to bring Batista back other than as another manifestation of Dexter’s regret, but the show has already pulled off one fake-out death. However, reviving Batista would be a disservice to the character, since it would undermine the emotional payoff from his final moments with Dexter, who must now grapple with the guilt.
Zayas’ return was heavily rumored in May after he was spotted in Dexter: Resurrection director Marcos Siega’s Instagram post. Speaking with Gold Derby, Hall also confirmed Batista’s death is now Dexter’s burden, and that would likely manifest next season. “I think it’s reasonable to expect that Angel will still reside in Dexter’s mind and heart. And yeah, we might explore that,” he said.
Dexter carries unfinished business in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 after Al Walker a.k.a. The Rapunzel Killer (Eric Stonestreet) escaped his grasp. Krysten Ritter is also confirmed to reprise Mia LaPierre / Lady Vengeance, who was believed to have died in Season 1. And then there’s Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington), who sets out to investigate Bautista’s suspicious death. Quinn already has a hunch about Dexter’s double life, which makes him an unpredictable, rogue threat.
Season 2 also casts Brian Cox as The New York Ripper, Dan Stevens as The Five Borough Killer, and Gabriel Luna as Ray Ballard, a.k.a. The Sleepy-Eyed Stranger, all of whom were teased as Dexter’s next marks in the Season 1 finale. Whether Dexter’s rogues’ gallery, including Arthur Miller / The Trinity Killer (John Lithgow), Miguel Prado (Jimmy Smits), and Brian Moser (Christian Camargo), will come back to torment him next season is still unclear, but at least he appears to be in the right headspace with his father Harry (James Remar) as his guide.
