Netflix's Steamy Drama Based on Popular Bestselling Book Is the Most-Watched Show on Streaming

Netflix is doubling down on adaptations based on beloved book series, and My Life With the Walter Boys is proof of that. The show, which debuted in 2023, returned for Season 3 in early April.

The series debuted on Aug. 6, and it instantly became a hit. One month later, the Nielsen charts for the week between Aug. 3 and 9 clarify that My Life With the Walter Boys was actually a big success, dominating the original series Top 10 with 896 million minutes viewed. Overall, the show was in third place, behind The Big Bang Theory, which has been dominating the charts for three weeks, and House of the Dragon, which released its Season 3 finale the same week.

My Life With the Walter Boys is a sleeper hit, but its current impact is undeniable, especially as it was ahead of Apple TV’s critically acclaimed darling Ted Lasso, which also returned with new episodes the same week, as well as Taylor Sheridan’s returning spy show Lioness.

My Life With the Walter Boys Is a Smash Hit

The series is based on Ali Novak’s novel of the same name, which was initially released on Wattpad before being published in 2014. The coming-of-age series follows Jackie Howard, a 15-year-old New Yorker whose life is turned upside down when her entire family is killed in a tragic car crash. She later relocates to rural Colorado to live with the Walters, a family of seven sons and one daughter.

The show saw Jackie navigate a love triangle between Cole and Alex Walter, as she tried to deny her feelings for Cole. In Season 3, after several attempts to make it work with Alex, Jackie and Cole finally got together.

However, things aren’t instantly perfect, because life throws more issues at them. As Jackie starts to discover herself and stand up for herself, including with her uncle, Cole realizes his passion and skill for racing. Considering Jackie lost her family in a car crash, this turns out to be one of their big problems this season.

Melanie Halsall developed My Life With the Walter Boys, which stars Nikki Rodriguez, Noah LaLonde, and Ashby Gentry as Jackie, Cole, and Alex, respectively. The cast also includes Corey Fogelmanis, Zoë Soul, Jaylan Evans, Sarah Rafferty, and Marc Blucas.

The series is a streaming hit, and critics are finally getting on board. Season 3 scored the first-ever positive score from critics, a 71% “fresh” score. However, it received only 56% from the audience, the lowest score yet. The teen drama still has a chance to have both camps in agreement, as Netflix has already renewed My Life With the Walter Boys for Season 4. The announcement came in May, months before the new episodes dropped.

At the same time, the hit series won’t keep fans waiting for too long after the cliffhanger ending. The cast returned to work just days before Season 3 premiered on Aug. 6, and likely the show’s success will fuel more future seasons.

Showrunner and executive producer Melanie Halsall shared, “I know I speak for the writers, the cast, and the crew when I say that it is beyond exciting to be returning to the world of Silver Falls for a fourth season. We are all incredibly grateful and are thrilled to dive in.”

My Life With the Walter Boys is streaming on Netflix. Season 4 is expected to premiere in 2027.
