A new Match of the Day star was introduced at the weekend.
Gabby Logan returned to screens on Saturday (September 5) to present highlights of eight Premier League matches. After beating Manchester United 2-0 in their opening game of the season, newly promoted Hull City welcomed Aston Villa to the MKM Stadium, while Coventry made the trip to Manchester City.
That’s not all, as Newcastle welcomed Bournemouth to St James’ Park, while Brentford hosted Sunderland, Brighton faced Leeds, and Nottingham Forest met Spurs. There were also highlights of Friday night’s game between Ipswich and Liverpool.
Elsewhere, two new managers went head-to-head at Craven Cottage as Álvaro Arbeloa’s Fulham took on Pierre Sage’s Crystal Palace. They weren’t the only new faces, as Rob Edwards made his debut on Match of the Day.
Gabby welcomed the former Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach to the studio at the start of the live programme. She said: “Good evening, it’s a busy one. Eight games on the way. No bids this week for Danny Murphy, but we did sign Rob Edwards before the transfer window shut.”
During the programme, Rob broke down the movement positioning behind Manchester City’s “sensational” goal against Coventry. He said: “Coventry were very, very good without the ball, very disciplined.
“There’s that 5-4-1 [formation], which they were in the main. What I found really interesting were the positions that Gvardiol and Enzo Fernandez picked up. I think when City have that much control, they’re able to put people in positions that just cause Coventry some problems.”
To mark the end of Rob’s first show, Gabby later said: “Thank you so much to Rob and Danny. Rob, you can come again.” She then joked: “I suppose you can too, Danny.”
BBC viewers were quick to share their thoughts on the new signing on social media. Many were impressed with Rob’s knowledge, as one person wrote on X: “Thought Rob Edwards spoke very well on MOTD.”
Another added: “Rob edwards on punditry WOW.” A third said: “MOTD and Rob Edwards OMG what a Saturday night.” Someone else wrote: “Great to see Rob on Match of the Day.”
Meanwhile, other viewers were confused by Rob’s appearance. “Rob Edwards on MOTD?!?!?!?!!” one person asked. “What is he doing on MOTD?” another shared. A third viewer echoed the sentiment, commenting: “What on earth is he doing on MOTD?”
Rob’s appearance comes after the BBC confirmed four new additions to the Match of the Day line-up for the 2026/27 season. As well as Rob, the show has also welcomed ex-Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld, former Premier League marksman Robbie Keane, ex-Man United and Aston Villa stalwart Ashley Young, and Thomas Frank, who was sacked as Spurs boss last season.
Gabby has reprised her presenting role alongside Kelly Cates and Mark Chapman. Returning pundits include Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, Joe Hart, Micah Richards, Ellen White, Steph Houghton, Danny Murphy, and Ashley Williams.
