Coventry’s cathedral ruins to be transformed into free cinema

Coventry’s historic cathedral ruins will be turned into a free cinema this weekend.

Families are being invited to bring chairs and snacks and take in a movie at one of our city’s most important historical sites.

Timings of family favourites are planned throughout today (Saturday 8 August) and Sunday (9 August) on a first come first serve basis.

A spokesman for Coventry City Council said: “Looking for something to do this weekend? Join us in the Cathedral Ruins for a two days of FREE movie magic.

“With popular films like Hoppers and GOAT, bring a chair and some snacks and enjoy your favourites on the big screen!”

The council’s website adds: “Free daytime and early-evening screenings of family favourite movies, creating a relaxed open-air cinema experience inside the Cathedral Ruins.

“Inside the backdrop of the spectacular Cathedral Ruins, enjoy a free film with the entire family at no cost. No booking is required, just turn up on the day!”

The schedule

Saturday

11am – Hoppers (U) – A 19-year-old animal lover uses technology that places her consciousness into a robotic beaver to uncover mysteries within the animal world beyond her imagination. Run time 105 mins

2pm – Transformers One (PG) – TRANSFORMERS ONE is the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, better known as sworn enemies, but once were friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of Cybertron forever. Run Time 114 mins

4.30pm – GOAT (PG) – A small goat with big dreams gets a once-in-a-lifetime shot to join the pros and play roarball, a high-intensity, co-ed, full-contact sport dominated by the fastest, fiercest animals in the world. Run Time 95 Min

Sunday

10.30am – Swallows and Amazons (PG) – Swallows and Amazons is an exhilarating new adaptation of Arthur Ransome’s treasured classic. A story of daring adventure and exploration as a group of children set off on an adventure of a life-time. Run Time 100 Min

1.30pm – Railway Children (U) – After the enforced absence of their father, the three Waterbury children move with their mother to Yorkshire, where they find themselves involved in several unexpected dramas along the railway by their new home. Run Time 104 min

3.30pm – GOAT (PG) A small goat with big dreams gets a once-in-a-lifetime shot to join the pros and play roarball, a high-intensity, co-ed, full-contact sport dominated by the fastest, fiercest animals in the world. Run Time 95 Min

Movies in the Ruins is part of Coventry City Council’s Big Summer Takeover which offers free family events across the month of August.

From BMX stunts, street theatres, an adrenaline-inducing zipwire and open-air cinema, each weekend will offer activities and experiences designed to bring the entire family together to celebrate the summer in Coventry.
