The hunt for Hollywood’s next James Bond formally ignited after Daniel Craig stepped away from the role following No Time to Die in 2021. Spearheaded by Amazon MGM Studios, alongside acclaimed casting director Nina Gold, the search for a suitable 007 replacement has been shrouded in intense secrecy for months, leaving the industry (and the internet) guessing about who will take up the mantle. Several high-profile names have been linked to the vacancy, with stars like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Henry Cavill, and Callum Turner continually tipped for the highly coveted role. However, an explosive new claim suggests that the audition doors have already slammed shut, as producers have allegedly locked in Craig’s successor.
At least, according to Gary Oldman. The Oscar-winning Slow Horses veteran set the rumor mill ablaze during a recent interview with Canada’s The Morning Show, as he casually shared some intel, claiming that the studio has already secretly selected the next James Bond. Oldman didn’t just hint at having insider knowledge; he outright stated that franchise bosses have made their choice and that the official announcement should be coming “pretty soon.” He also strongly endorsed his spy protégé Jack Lowden for the role, revealing that his “fingers are crossed” for the Scottish actor to inherit the legendary license to kill.
The bombshell revelation prompted internet sleuths to obsessively parse every recent industry interview for hidden clues and search for new comments to support the claim. The spotlight quickly shifted to Peaky Blinders‘ creator Steven Knight, who is currently penning the script for the highly anticipated Bond 26. He was directly confronted with Oldman’s claims during an appearance on BBC 4’s Today show, per Deadline, to which he shared a cryptic response, playfully stonewalling the interrogation. Rather than delivering a flat-out denial, he chuckled and stated, “I cannot speak about this subject. Much as I would dearly love to.”
He further fueled the fire by admitting that he is writing for the character rather than the actor, but “it does make life a little bit easier if you know who that person is.” When pushed on when he discovered the identity of Craig’s replacement, Knight simply laughed and retreated into standard spy protocol: “I refer you to my previous answer.” He then sidestepped the questioning entirely, moving the conversation away from the casting buzz and toward his deep reverence for the cinematic legacy he has been tasked with protecting:
