Tom Jones says only one thing would make him retire as he slams The Voice axe

Sir Tom Jones revealed one issue would stop him working in the future after reports claimed the legendary Welsh crooner had been dropped from his role on The Voice after over a decade

Sir Tom Jones insisted there would only be one thing that would make him turn his back on his six decades career.

The 86-year-old share his defiant attitude to retirement before learning he was being axed from his long-standing role on ITV’s The Voice.

Today Sir Tom revealed he will no longer feature – and criticised the decision by the big bosses. saying: “The only thing I know right now is that there’s never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who’s still pretty good at his job.”

Ahead of production on season 15 kicking off this month, the likes of Cheryl and Aitch joining Will.I.Am and Kelly Rowland lined up as coaches.

And taking to Instagram the share his disappointment at the decision, Sir Tom said: “To be clear, I did not want to leave The Voice as I love the show and really appreciate the audience.

ITV made this decision – obviously a while ago, and I was just told recently. The reason given is because of a financial difficulty with insurance. They now say in the press they want to ‘refresh’ the show, and a new coaching line-up there wouldn’t be a chair for me.

“They are offering a much-reduced role where I would make an appearance but without being actually involved from the start, and I’m not thrilled about that. So the only thing I know right now is that there’s never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who’s still pretty good at his job.”

Sir Tom had previously revealed that there was only one thing that would stop him continuing his career as he still loves entertaining and can’t imagine slowing down.

Sir Tom previously told the Metro: “If something went wrong with my vocal ability, I wouldn’t want to go on not in full strength. I wouldn’t like to shortchange an audience.”

The star continues to perform to huge crowds. Though in 2017 he underwent replacement surgery on his left hip in 2017.

Five years later, he confirmed he had seen deterioration in his right hip, leading to doctors advising him to undergo another replacement. At the time, he joked he had been trying to fit the operation around his busy touring schedule.

But with two new hips in tact, in 2025, Tom had to postpone a concert in Bremen, Germany. He developed an upper respiratory infection that required treatment and rest.

He had also been told in recent yers to overhaul his diet to help him. He cut down on drinking alcohol and adopted a caveman, or paleo, diet, which sees dieters focus on eating lean meats, fruits, fish, vegetables, nuts and seeds.
