The King of the Monsters is back, and Japan is about to have another very bad day. A new trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero has arrived, giving fans their first substantial look at the highly anticipated sequel to Godzilla Minus One, and it looks awesome!
After months of short teasers that kept the story largely under wraps, this footage finally offers a better idea of what Takashi Yamazaki has cooked up for Godzilla’s return.
The sequel takes place in 1949, two years after Godzilla Minus One, with Japan still recovering from World War II and the destruction caused by Godzilla.
The country managed to survive the monster once, but his return so soon afterward makes the situation even more terrifying. Beating him a second time probably isn’t going to be nearly as simple.
That puts Ryunosuke Kamiki back at the center of the story as Koichi Shikishima. The first movie followed Koichi as he struggled through the devastation of postwar Japan before Godzilla brought an entirely new nightmare crashing into his life.
He won’t be facing the new crisis alone. Minami Hamabe returns as Noriko Oishi, alongside Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, Yuki Yamada as Shiro Mizushima, Kuranosuke Sasaki as Seiji Akitsu, Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ota, and Miou Tanaka as Tatsuo Hotta.
There have also been hints that Godzilla may not be the only threat waiting for these characters, which could make an already brutal situation even worse.
Yamazaki is once again directing, and also serves as screenwriter, and VFX supervisor. Toho Studios is producing the film with ROBOT, while SHIROGUMI Inc. is handling the visual effects. Y
amazaki has previously teased Godzilla’s new powers and suggested that the monster returning only two years after the previous attack will be one of the most horrifying aspects of the story.
The scale of the production is getting a serious upgrade as well. Godzilla Minus Zero is the first Japanese production to be filmed entirely for IMAX, giving Yamazaki an appropriately huge canvas for Godzilla’s next rampage.
The sequel comes after Godzilla Minus One became a massive success for Toho during the franchise’s 70th anniversary era, earning major critical and commercial attention around the world. That success has also changed how Toho is approaching the release of the follow-up.
Godzilla Minus Zero will get a much more coordinated worldwide theatrical rollout, with Toho and GKIDS collaborating on the release. The movie opens in Japan on November 3, 2026, followed just three days later by theaters in the United States and Canada on November 6.
The original film worked because Godzilla wasn’t simply a giant monster spectacle. His arrival made an already desperate human story considerably worse.
Bringing him back only two years later gives Godzilla Minus Zero an intense start. These people barely survived the first attack, and now the nightmare has returned.
