After growing international criticism over Israel’s settlement policy, the UK, France and Canada have moved to impose restrictions on goods from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, prompting a swift retaliation from Tel Aviv, which announced plans to close Britain’s consulate in East Jerusalem and take additional measures against British officials. Israel said on Tuesday it would close Britain’s consulate in East Jerusalem in response to plans by the UK, France and Canada to ban imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, escalating tensions between Israel and some of its traditional Western allies over settlement expansion and the future of a Palestinian state.
