IMAX, the large-size film format invented in Canada in the 1970s, is having a cultural moment right now. Christopher Nolan became the first film-maker to shoot a major feature film entirely in IMAX with The Odyssey, and despite the hassle of lugging the cumbersome IMAX cameras all over the Mediterranean, the gamble paid off in spades. The movie is one of the biggest hits of the year, and the mad scramble for IMAX tickets, especially in the select locations equipped with 70mm film projectors, only heightened the anticipation for the film. Now, one of next year’s most anticipated films is set to come to an IMAX theater near you.
Star Wars: Starfighter is the latest film in the Star Wars saga, but will reportedly be unconnected to the previous films of the franchise, representing a fresh start for the venerable space opera saga’s 50th anniversary. Details about the movie are being kept as top secret as the Death Star plans, but we do know that Ryan Gosling will lead a cast that includes Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, and Flynn Gray.
And now we know that the film will open big — literally. Star Wars: Starfighter will premiere in IMAX theaters worldwide on May 28, 2027, which is the 50th anniversary of the 1977 release of the original Star Wars film. This special super-sized release of the film was shot with IMAX-certified cameras and will be converted to IMAX 70mm film prints for release in a select number of IMAX film locations. Could it challenge The Odyssey‘s IMAX sales records, which have helped propel that film to a worldwide gross of $1.63 billion USD and counting? Only time will tell.

Who Are the Behind-the-Scenes Talents on ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’?
Directing Starfighter is hitmaker Shawn Levy, who’s currently riding high with the successes of Stranger Things and Deadpool and Wolverine; he’s set to re-team with Gosling for the MCU supernatural actioner Ghost Rider. The script is by Jonathan Tropper, a frequent Levy collaborator who also created the hit Apple TV series Your Friends and Neighbors. Shooting the film is Oscar-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda, who is Joseph Kosinski‘s go-to lenser; the score is by Thomas Newman (1917).
