Metal Gear Solid Is Back With A New Co-Op Adventure

Metal Gear Solid is in a bit of a tricky spot. Without series creator Hideo Kojima at the helm, Konami will struggle to release a completely brand-new entry. Yet, as great as remakes are, fans won’t be satiated by them forever, and there are only so many games in the series that Konami can splash a fresh coat of paint on and charge $70 for. So, the studio and its fans have to get a little bit creative with the next release.

Fortunately, that’s exactly what’s happening, as a brand-new co-op Metal Gear Solid experience is on its way. Fans will finally be able to play a Metal Gear Solid game together for the first time in a while. It is obviously phenomenal news that Metal Gear Solid is returning with a brand-new release, but what will likely impress fans even more is that the experience will be given out for free with absolutely no strings attached.

Metal Gear Solid is no stranger to co-op. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops featured a co-operative element in which Snake had to team up with a squad of allies to tackle missions. It also featured an online mode, as did Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, although they were exclusively focused on competitive play. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was the first and only game in the series to offer genuine co-operative play, allowing up to four people to complete the majority of its missions. It was a great game, but being the only co-operative entry is a genuine shame.

That’s where the upcoming Metal Gear Solid co-op project comes into the fray. Developed by Felipe, the project is a mod for the first Metal Gear Solid game that allows two people to complete the entirety of the game’s campaign. This isn’t the first Metal Gear Solid fan project, but it is one of its most ambitious, as it completely revamps the original experience to deliver something that fans have never been able to do before.

Getting to play what is inarguably one of the best Metal Gear Solid games with a friend is a genuine treat. According to Felipe’s official Patreon page (where updates about the mod are posted), the project is about 50% complete, meaning we’re unlikely to see it any time soon. However, what has been confirmed is that the mod won’t cost you a thing, as Felipe is releasing it for free. You don’t even need to be subscribed to his official Patreon in order to get it.

It is always wonderful to see fans breathe new life into an older game, especially considering they’re unlikely to get the official MGS remake they want any time soon. It remains an incredible game that’s well worth playing in 2026, and this co-op mod simply gives people more ways to do so. Hopefully, it won’t be long until this incredible mod is released to the public, and fans and newcomers alike can play Metal Gear Solid in a whole new way.
