Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Officially Returns October 2026

Brandon Sanderson’s The Stormlight Archive has become one of the most iconic franchises in modern fantasy, building an enormous following since The Way of Kings first introduced readers to Roshar in 2010. Across five sprawling novels and numerous companion stories, the world’s devastating highstorms, ancient conflicts, Shardblades, and the mysterious powers of the Knights Radiant are among the most compelling aspects of Sanderson’s larger Cosmere universe.

Beyond the texts themselves, Brotherwise Games and Dragonsteel brought Roshar to tabletop role-playing with the Cosmere Roleplaying Game, whose initial Stormlight setting debuted in 2025 and has continued to receive new adventures and expansions. The franchise has also recieved new miniatures and other tabletop releases, making gaming an increasingly important part of the Cosmere’s future.

And with Stormlight: War for Roshar arriving this Fall, there is no indication that Cosmere adaptations in the gaming space will slow down anytime soon.

Stormlight‘s next major chapter launches on Kickstarter starting October 13, 2026, with the release of an ambitious new strategy board game titled War for Roshar. Developed by Brotherwise Games in partnership with Dragonsteel Books, the game is designed by John D. Clair and attempts to translate the enormous scale of Sanderson’s conflict into an asymmetric tabletop war game.

In War for Roshar, you take control of either the Coalition of Honor or the forces of Odium, with major characters including Dalinar, Kaladin, Raboniel, and Taravangian appearing as leaders. Matches unfold over eight rounds and support one-on-one games, three-versus-one battles, or teams of two, with every round ending in either a Highstorm or Everstorm.

Players will upgrade their leaders, deploy armies, use Stormlight-powered action cards, negotiate with neutral nations, and fight for control of territory across Roshar. To win, players must capture strategically important Oathgates while completing secondary objectives, with new units, allies, and Surgebinding abilities becoming available as the conflict develops.

Brotherwise has described the game as an asymmetric strategy experience in the tradition of titles like War of the Ring and Star Wars: Rebellion. The Kickstarter will offer a standard base game alongside optional deluxe components and a “Champions” mini-expansion. Backers will also be able to add new Stormlight Premium Miniatures and Brotherwise’s first Mistborn Premium Miniatures set.

Fulfillment is currently planned for 2027, with a traditional retail release expected around the 2027 holiday season. Overall, it’s an exciting time to be a Cosmere enthusiast, and War for Roshar marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Stormlight fans.
