Lee Mack had the full support of his family as his three children proudly watched their dad accept his award at the National Television Awards on Tuesday night.
The 58-year-old and his ITV show The 1% Club nabbed an award for Best Quiz Show, beating stiff competition from Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel, Richard Osman’s House of Games, Ant and Dec‘s Limitless Win and The Chase.
During his speech, the comedian referred to his three children Arlo, 21, Louie, 19, and daughter Millie, 14, in his speech, admitting that they didn’t usually come to the awards dos.
As the camera panned to his kids watching awkwardly from the audience, he said: “My kids don’t usually come to these things, but my kids, Arlo, Millie and Louie are here. See – Dad is not a useless cretin, you’re wrong!
“I have so many people to thank, the brains behind the operation Andy, because I’m just the eye-candy. I’d like to thank everyone at magnum media we’re like a family, can’t remember everyone’s name. That kind of family.
“I want to thank my beautiful wife Tara, none of this would be possible without you and I want to thank my two ex-wives without whom this wouldn’t be necessary.”
He quipped: “I don’t really have ex-wives, I just like that gag.”
Lee was among royalty last night as he joined Sir David Attenborough as the big winners of the night.
The centenarian, who has most recently fronted Secret Garden for the BBC, could not be there in person but executive producer Mark Brownlow collected it in his honour. Sir David managed to beat Ant and Dec on their once-annual National Television Award.
Reading David’s words, he said: “I’m sorry that I cannot be here to accept it. If this award is a response to the part television has played in the growing recognition of the terrible plight our planet is in, and also of the fact we now have a pressing responsibility to do what we can to protect and preserve it, I am honoured.
“If we are to repair the planet, we need a major national and international initiative, which will certainly require our support. But it’s also possible to make small differences in our own spaces and neighbourhoods.
“If enough small differences are made, they do add up to something significant, while also providing spacers we can enjoy being in. Humanity has always needed the natural world for all the practicalities of life and for our mental wellbeing.
“Now, the natural word needs us too. Surely, we must not ignore that simple fact. Thank you very much.”
