Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Digger, and Tom Cruise looks like he’s having an absolute blast playing a powerful man desperately trying to save the planet from a catastrophe he helped create.
Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the dark comedy casts Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a greedy oil baron and apparently the most powerful man in the world. His latest problem is a big one.
A giant apocalyptic Greenland iceberg named Judy is threatening to destroy everything, and Digger races to convince humanity that he’s the guy who can fix it.
The official pitch captures the ridiculousness perfectly: “Digg or die. A man. A plan. A meltdown. Mother Nature loves a winner.” Introducing… Digger Rockwell.
“A comedy of catastrophic proportions. The most powerful man in the world (starring Tom Cruise as Digger Rockwell) embarks on a frantic mission to prove that he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.”
This new trailer gives us a much clearer idea of what Iñárritu and Cruise are cooking up. It looks completely nuts, mixing apocalyptic stakes with political satire, powerful people scrambling to control an impossible situation, and Cruise throwing himself into a character who appears to have an ego capable of competing with the iceberg.
The whole thing has a modern Dr. Strangelove flavor, finding comedy in watching extremely important people attempt to manage a crisis that has spiraled far beyond them.
Cruise is joined by a killer cast that includes Jesse Plemons, Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, Robert John Burke, Burn Gorman, Michael Stuhlbarg, and John Goodman.
Iñárritu co-wrote the screenplay with Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman, while Cruise and Iñárritu also serve as producers.
The movie reunites Iñárritu with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who previously worked with the filmmaker on Birdman and The Revenant. Production lasted six months in the UK, beginning in late 2024 and continuing into 2025, with the movie shot on 35mm using VistaVision.
The more footage Warner Bros. releases, the crazier and more entertaining Digger looks. There’s something especially fun about Cruise taking his trademark intensity and aiming it at an absurd character like Digger Rockwell.
He looks fully committed to the insanity, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Cruise is making a serious run at that Best Actor Oscar with this performance.
If the finished movie delivers on what this trailer is selling, we could be getting one of the strangest major studio releases of the year.
Warner Bros. will release Digger in theaters worldwide on October 2nd, 2026.
