An Aotearoa artist so productive it can sometimes be tricky to keep up, Adam Hattaway and his trusty Haunters follow last month’s all-star tribute to Warren Zevon (War On Zevon natch) with whole new studio record Hot Variety Vol. 2. The sequel to last year’s Hot Variety was laid down to 2” 16 track tape over a two year period at Sublime Studio in Ōtiake, with producer Dick Picton, engineer Tom Havard and tape operators Sam Charlesworth and Steve Harrop, the same crew as volume one in fact.
All the better to capture the in-the-moment rock ‘n’ soul synergy of this firecracker combo, documenting a “roll call of Haunters past and present”, including Liam Quinn, Tess Liautaud, Holdyn Skinner, Sam White, Thomas Isbister, and Elmore Jones. Lead single ‘Country‘ yearns for the rustic life, accompanied with footage of Hattaway’s top team making studio magic happen in rural, grey-skied Canterbury.
The tunes flow free and the vibes feel as they should be.
