‘We’re keeping things local… keeping it Bristol’

One of the most famous pubs along Gloucester Road in Bristol is undergoing a major refurb – and will open at the end of this week with a new name and new owners.
The Cider Press closed recently, and for a time, mystery surrounded what would become of it.
Now, one of Bristol’s fastest-growing and hippest pub groups has taken it over, and it will open on Friday with a new name – the Two Suns.
The Bristol-based team behind the transformation is Guerrilla Pubs, which runs a diverse group of pubs from the Farm next to St Werburgh’s City Farm, and the Old England in Montpelier, to the Stag & Hounds in Old Market, the Shakespeare and the Star & Dove in Totterdown.
The firm has 10 pubs across Bristol, with two more opening soon, including the Two Suns.
The new Gloucester Road pub is set to open at midday on Friday (Sept 11), with live music later that evening.
Guerrilla Pubs managing director Julian McLauchlan said he was looking forward to the grand reopening. “We’ve now taken over the Cider Press, and are going to be changing the name to the Two Suns, which is quite exciting – it’s a little nod back to the pub’s previous incarnations.
“It’s not just for cider, as you can imagine. We’re going to have four IPAs on, several different ciders just to keep the tradition going, we’re going to have Moretti, Amstel, Peroni, lots of lagers and we’re going to be putting on Red Stripe, which is a new one for the place.
“We’re keeping things local, we’re also going to have Wiper & True Kaleidoscope on tap, for anybody that’s a big fan of theirs. We shall also have some local ciders in bag and box, just to keep it Bristol.
“We’re going to be opening on Friday at 12pm as the day goes on there will be more and more things happening. We’ve got music in the evening, and we’re really looking forward to it,” he added.
