Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s physical disc still requires a download because Square Enix “didn’t want to make any compromises”

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will launch on a physical disc, but there’s an important caveat in that the game still requires an online download. That’s in contrast to the previous two parts of the remake trilogy, which launched with multiple discs containing the entirety of each respective game. Director Naoki Hamaguchi says releasing the entire game on disc would’ve meant compromising on the RPG’s quality.

“When we had an internal discussion with the development team about how we wanted to approach the physical discs and the physical releases of FFVII Revelation,” Hamaguchi tells IGN, “initially there were conversations about using the same disc size as we did for, say, FFVII Rebirth. But if we were to do that, it would mean that we would have to make a compromise in terms of the fidelity and the quality of the game. So as a development team, we didn’t want to do that. We didn’t want to make any compromises for the game.”
