A TV enthusiast has shared an alternative show for fans of Gilmore Girls who might be looking for something new to curl up on the sofa and watch this upcoming cosy season
As the weather gets colder and days get shorter and darker, many people will be looking for a new show to watch while wrapped up with a blanket on the sofa.
Even though it’s been more than 26 years since the show first aired, many people have got into the habit of rewatching the early 2000s teen drama Gilmore Girls during the autumn months, as it’s been named a cosy essential for the autumn, allowing viewers to relax while watching the comforting show. The series follows Lauren Graham as young single mum Lorelai Gilmore, and Alexis Bledel as her whip-smart daughter Rory, as the pair navigate life in the charming small town of Stars Hollow, while also exploring Lorelai’s tense relationship with her wealthy parents.
The show is easily accessible for fans, and is available to stream on both Netflix and HBO Max, but some might be wanting to find something new to watch in the upcoming months. To help, one man named Ethan, who is known on TikTok as ‘EthanNeville’, shared three shows he thinks will tick all the same boxes for fans of Gilmore Girls who are chasing that same distinctive magic that made them fall in love with the beloved teen drama.
“If you liked Gilmore Girls, here are three more shows that you will absolutely love,” he said at the opening of his video, before diving straight into his list.
Heart of Dixie
“Gilmore Girls is hard to replicate, but a brilliant cosy series can be found in the Heart of Dixie,” Ethan said for the first show.
The series centres on Zoe Hart, portrayed by Rachel Bilson, a surgeon who relocates from New York City to a small Alabama town after her medical fellowship doesn’t work out, accepting a job offer from a stranger to practise at his local surgery. “This show focuses on the definition of community, which you will absolutely love,” Ethan added.
All four seasons of Heart of Dixie are available to watch on ITVX as well as on Amazon Prime.
One Tree Hill
“An early 2000s teen drama is the exact concoction that everyone loves about Gilmore Girls, and that is exactly what you can expect in One Tree Hill,” he said for his second recommendation. The series tracks two half-brothers, Lucas and Nathan Scott, living in a small North Carolina town.
While they don’t always get along, particularly when it comes to their famous and well-off father, they’re forced to unite and forge their own journeys through life. Although the programme begins as a teen drama, similar to Gilmore Girls, viewers have applauded how it tackles more mature themes as it progresses, effectively maturing alongside its audience.
Fans might also recognise the actor who plays Lucas, Chad Michael Murray, who also appeared in the first two series of Gilmore Girls.
All nine seasons of One Tree Hill are available to stream on Netflix and HBO Max, and to watch for free with adverts on ITVX.
Sweet Magnolias
“Another cosy series set in a small North American town graces this list,” Ethan added, revealing his third recommendation was called Sweet Magnolias.
The programme follows three lifelong best friends known locally as the Sweet Magnolias, as the women rally round one another through significant life changes in their small town, encompassing careers, romance, friendship, and family.
All five series of Sweet Magnolia are presently available to stream on Netflix.
