One of the most celebrated horror films of the 21st century – an Oscar-winning production which remains equally relevant and powerful almost a decade after its debut – will air on television tonight.
Written and directed by Jordan Peele in his first feature film as director, Get Out follows Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya), a young Black photographer who travels to meet the relatives of his white girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams).
The pair anticipate an uncomfortable first encounter, but what transpires is a disturbing chain of events where Chris starts observing the peculiar conduct of the Armitage family’s Black household workers, as well as their disturbing visitors.
The narrative then escalates into a chilling discovery regarding the family’s true reason for wanting to meet Chris, while audiences witness a blend of psychological terror and profound social examination of racial relations, discrimination and entitlement.
During the weeks after its 2017 launch, Get Out generated $255.5 million globally against a relatively small $4.5 million budget. Since then, the film has become a regular entry in specialist publications’ top 10 rankings, securing nominations from numerous esteemed awards ceremonies, and claiming various accolades, reports Wales Online.

Get Out received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor (Kaluuya), eventually securing Best Original Screenplay.
Peele etched his name in cinematic history by becoming only the third filmmaker ever to receive Best Picture, Director and Screenplay Oscar nominations simultaneously.

For those not convinced by the critical acclaim, audiences worldwide have been equally vocal in their praise online. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film boasts a near-perfect 98% approval rating, with viewers largely applauding the atmospheric tension the story creates.
“The unsettling atmosphere and gradual tension are matched by a sharp exploration of racism, privilege, and the way prejudice can hide behind seemingly polite behaviour,” one fan wrote.
Another described Get Out as an “incredibly well-constructed horror film that turns a slow, unsettling build into something increasingly disturbing without ever losing its grip. Every strange detail feels purposeful, the social commentary is woven seamlessly into the horror, the comedy lands exactly when it should.”
Further comments highlighted Kaluuya’s “phenomenal” and “excellent” portrayal, while numerous reviewers simply declared the film to be “one of the best horror and suspense movies out there”, or “much more than a typical horror movie.”
