A24 Breaks Its Own Brutal Box Office Record For The Second Time In Three Months

Onslaught is being torn to pieces at the box office.

2026’s Onslaught, which A24 produced and distributed, was written by Simon Barrett and directed by Adam Wingard. It follows a former sniper (Adria Arjona) who fights to defend her daughter (Blake Kennedy) when their trailer park is besieged by genetically engineered super soldiers. The movie, which features a star-studded ensemble cast that also includes Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Drew Starkey, and Michael Biehn, debuted over Labor Day weekend with a 3-day domestic total of $1.9 million, which saw it landing at No. 13 on the chart behind fellow new releases By Any Means (No. 4) and Fall 2 (No. 12).

Per Box Office Mojo, Onslaught took in an additional $267,731 during its sophomore weekend at the domestic box office, falling six places to hit No. 19 on the domestic chart. This sees the movie dropping 86% from its opening weekend, which is more than any other A24 movie on Box Office Mojo‘s chart of the biggest sophomore drops of all time.

This drop, which lands between 2026’s We Bury the Dead (No. 17 with an 85.7% drop) and 2024’s Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom (No. 16 with 86.1%) marks the second time in three months that A24 has broken their own record with a huge sophomore drop. Previously, their biggest drop for a movie they distributed was earned by 2026’s The Death of Robin Hood, which dropped 78.5% during its sophomore weekend this June.

While Onslaught played in fewer theaters during its sophomore weekend, which naturally would have led to a week-over-week decrease, its number of screens only dropped 35%, falling from 1,918 to 1,252. This substantial week 2 drop was more affected by the movie’s per-screen average, which dropped a staggering 78.6%, from $998 to $213.

There are several possible reasons for this record-breaking drop. First, Onslaught reviews have not been particularly glowing, earning it a Rotten Tomatoes score of 59% from critics (which is one point below the Rotten threshold) and a Popcornmeter score of 61% from verified audience members (which is one point above the Fresh threshold).

Additionally, while this announcement was not directly related to Onslaught, which was created in its entirety beforehand, A24 has been at the center of a controversy since June, when they revealed that they were partnering with Google Deepmind to develop AI-powered filmmaking tools. This was met with derision from anti-AI film fans across social media and may be affecting the overall performance of their post-June output.

It ultimately remains to be seen if Onslaught will be able to end up in the black in theaters. The movie reportedly cost $15 million, which could potentially place its estimated break-even point somewhere around $37.5 million. That is not a particularly high benchmark, but considering this drop and the fact that it has only grossed $3.1 million worldwide so far, it most likely will not have the momentum to reach that number by the end of its theatrical run.
