Royal family
Here’s what statement prior to Megxit that left the Duchess of Sussex in tears.
Now that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are back in the U.K., royal watchers have been very curious about what Prince William and the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) think of the Sussexes’ return.
That’s because the Waleses and the Sussexes haven’t spoken in years, and as Meghan and Harry detailed in their Netflix docuseries, neither William nor Kate ever had a warm relationship with their sister-in-law. According to the duke and duchess, the future king actually left Meghan in tears just before they moved to America.
Prince Harry recalled the statement that made Meghan ‘burst into tears’
In the fifth episode of the couple’s Netflix series, Harry spoke about how he and the Suits alum were treated when they were working royals compared to how William and Kate were treated.
As Express noted, Harry said, “The saddest part of it was this wedge created between me and my brother so that he’s now on the institution’s side. And I get, part of that I get. I understand, right? That’s his inheritance, so to some extent, it’s already ingrained in him that part of his responsibility is the survivability and the continuation of this institution.”
The duke added that later that day, a story came out claiming that part of the reason for their decision to step down was because Prince William had “bullied them out,” but the Palace would be putting out a statement from both princes denying that was the case.
Harry remembered his wife’s reaction to that, saying, “Once I got in the car after the meeting, I was told about a joint statement that had been put out in my name and my brother’s name, squashing the story about him bullying us out of the family. I couldn’t believe it. No one had asked me permission to put my name to a statement like that.
“I rang [Meghan] and I told her, and she burst into floods of tears because within four hours they were happy to lie to protect my brother and yet for three years, they were never willing to tell the truth to protect us.”
The Sussexes ‘aired out the family’s dirty laundry’ after they stepped down
A royal expert reminded everyone that despite the duke and duchess being upset about not being made aware of things prior to leaving the U.K., they hit out with several surprise attacks against the royals and “aired their dirty laundry in public.”
During an appearance on the Pod Save The King podcast, royal biographer Ed Owens said: “We’ve had the Sussexes airing their dirty laundry in public for the best part of three years — and again it has done much damage to that narrative of happy family life.”
Fast-forward to August 2026 and Meghan and Harry returned to the U.K. No reason for their move back to the country they said they were forced to flee was given, and now it’s anyone’s guess if the Waleses and the Sussexes will ever be able to reconcile.
