Fans finally get another update on True Detective Season 5. Of course, they’ll still have to wait to see exactly what it entails.
Speaking to Deadline, HBO Chairman and CEO of Max Content Casey Bloys discussed everything from the Emmys to the end of Hacks. Bloys also offered a vague yet promising update on the future of True Detective, stating that fans should “Stay tuned” for further updates on Season 5. When asked if Nicolas Cage is still attached to star in True Detective Season 5, Bloys reiterated, “Stay tuned.”
Why Fans Are So Excited About Finally Seeing True Detective Season 5
Created by Nic Pizzolatto, who served as showrunner for the series’ first three seasons,True Detective premiered in 2014 and quickly found a footholdwith audiences looking for a new crime thriller. The series is an anthology featuring different stories and characters each season, andTrue Detective Season 1 introduced audiences to Detectives Rust Cohle and Mary Hart, portrayed by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, respectively.
Season 1 followed its leading duo as they revisited a crime they tackled years prior after new evidence implicated the man they helped put away in a string of other killings. Over eight episodes spanning two distinct eras, True Detective wove a tense, tight narrative that critics lauded and audiences loved, earning numerous major industry award nominations and a full dozen wins.
Since then, True Detective has returned for three more critically acclaimed seasons featuring new star-studded ensemble casts and unforgettable storylines. The most recent, True Detective: Night Country, premiered in 2024 and has been widely lauded as the best entry in the series since the first season.
True Detective: Night Country boasts a 93% critical “Fresh” rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, based on more than 200 reviews. However, True Detective: Night Country holds a 55% audience-generated Popcornmeter score on the platform, across more than 5,000 user-submitted reviews.
What Audiences Can Expect from True Detective Season 5
Following True Detective: Night Country, new showrunner Issa López opened up about just how far removed Season 5 will be from what audiences had grown accustomed to. “It’s completely different. There’s different characters, different setting, different story — and I’m enjoying it like crazy,” López said at the time.
One year later, Hollywood icon Nicolas Cage was reportedly in talks to star in True Detective Season 5. No details regarding his potential character or the next storyline were made available. It was also reported that filming on True Detective Season 5 was tentatively planned for 2026, with the series’ next entry eyeing a 2027 release date.
Unfortunately for fans, updates have been coming slowly. In May, Cage confirmed he had not yet signed on for True Detective, nor had he taken the time to watch the series for himself. “I think they’re working on the material, but I haven’t heard about it in quite some time,” Cage stated. “I’m not signed on to anything; we’re just talking. I like Issa López a lot, and would be thrilled to work with her, but nothing is concrete. And I’ve never seen the first season of True Detective, but I’ve heard great things.”
