Hollywood star Vin Diesel is generating hype for the sequel to his 2015 fantasy action film, a project that has long been in development. He shared images of himself from behind the scenes looking almost unrecognizable with his character’s bearded look, and the post very quickly went viral amid fan excitement for the sequel.
In 2015, Diesel starred in The Last Witch Hunter. He played the role of Kaulder, an immortal witch hunter seeking to stop a plague from decimating the planet. The actor has been teasing the sequel ever since, with the latest example coming in a social media post. It includes images of Diesel as Kaulder with hair and a beard, with the character hanging around wolves and holding a sword. The post is approaching 300K likes on Instagram as of this writing.
The Last Witch Hunter 2 Could Finally Be Moving Ahead
Diesel did not include a caption, so he was not simply celebrating an anniversary for The Last Witch Hunter, or posting about the movie for any other clear reason. Being vague makes it appear like Diesel is hinting at something else soon to come involving the IP. Even without an explicit tease, the post quickly going viral shows how much anticipation there is for Kaulder’s return. It’s possible that Diesel is gearing up to finally start production on the project in the near future, given that it was reported to be happening last year and had been expected to start filming sometime in 2026.
Officially, Lionsgate put the project into production last fall. It was reported at the time that the studio was developing The Last Witch Hunter 2 alongside Diesel’s One Race Films. Along with Diesel returning as Kaulder, it was also reported that Michael Caine was coming out of retirement to appear in the sequel as well. However, despite initial reports suggesting the project was being fast-tracked, no major updates on its production have since been revealed. That makes Diesel’s vague new post all the more intriguing as a likely hint on more to come.
One Subtle Tease for the Sequel Very Quickly Went Viral
Breck Eisner directed the original movie, which was written by Cory Goodman, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless. It took inspiration from Diesel’s own Dungeons & Dragons campaigns as an original character he created. Along with Diesel and Caine, other stars of the film include Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones), Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings), Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), Julie Engelbrecht (Homeland), and Dawn Olivieri (Heroes).
Reviews were not stellar for The Last Witch Hunter, and it has even been forgotten to an extent. Still, it does have a fan base, considered by many to be a very underrated film. It reached nearly $150 million at the global box office, which was respectable, though it did have an enormous budget that was reportedly close to $100 million. For whatever difficulties there may have been behind the scenes with getting a sequel made, what’s clear is that Diesel still feels passionate about Kaulder.
A release date hasn’t been set for The Last Witch Hunter 2 at this time.
