Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have shared plans for new ‘Origins 1971 – 1978’ box set.
The band remain a cornerstone in American rock music, with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers set to be inducted at tonight’s Americana Awards. The original members of the Heartbreakers, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch and Ron Blair, will open the show with a special reunion performance alongside Grammy-winning superstar Chris Stapleton. But that’s not all, as Heartbreakers Steve Ferrone and Scott Thurston will join for a final song.
New box set ‘Origins 1971 – 1978’ looks to be a superlative trawl through the archives, focusing on the band’s formative era and Tom Petty’s growth as a songwriter.
Comprising of five albums, the box set lands on November 6th and features collaborations with legendary artists Al Kooper, Leon Russell, Jim Gordon, Emory Gordy and more, across country, folk, punk, reggae, rock and soul originals.
The archival project will be available as a 5LP box set, a 4CD box set and an uber deluxe edition, each with Blu-ray and DVD.
In a wonderful twist the package will include a 88-page fanzine featuring liner notes by David Fricke and Bud Scoppa, track-by-track annotations from the original band, complete album credits for the first two albums and a trove of unearthed archival photos and memorabilia, alongside polaroids, postcards, collectibles and more. The heart of the record is ‘No Sleep Til L.A.’, an archival trawl which which will be available as a stand-alone LP, CD and limited-edition Zoetrope. A 12-track coming-of-age document, it captures Tom Petty between Mudcrutch’s earliest recordings and the formation of the Heartbreakers.
