The secrecy of the celebrity’s Hollywood romance was ruined by police

The man on everyone’s lips at the moment, Matthew Rhys attended the Emmy’s last night alongside actress Keri Russell as both were nominated for their roles in separate popular TV shows of 2026, Widow’s Bay and The Diplomat, respectively.
Both donning matching black attire the pair walked the red carpet together in LA, the couple are adored by fans as one of Hollywood’s power couples. In 2014 the pair started their relationship on the set of The Americans, however they met ten years prior when a tipsy Matthew asked Keri for her number but nothing came of the exchange.
Rumours of the pair dating began to spread with reports of the talented duo being “touchy” with each other in public, this was then perpetuated further by their steamy GQ cover in January 2024.

During a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Matthew recalled how the NYPD inadvertently revealed their secret romance to the entire cast and crew of the American spy drama they were filming together.
The pair were asleep in a flat when Keri woke Matthew up, convinced a burglar was inside. Eager to demonstrate his bravery in the early stages of their relationship, Matthew grabbed a fire poker and ventured out into the hallway.
Matthew explained: “Because it was early days and I thought, ‘whatever I do next might define the way she regards me for the rest of my life.’ I went, ‘You stay here, I shall go out.’ And I think my classically trained pipes made them flee, thankfully.”
After the intruders had left, the NYPD swiftly tracked down the suspects and retrieved the stolen belongings.
The police, keen to deliver a heroic photo opportunity, insisted on returning the stolen property directly to Keri on the set of The Americans. Keri attempted to politely decline, requesting to simply collect it at the station, but the enthusiastic officers turned up to set regardless.
“So they very kindly, and God bless them and thank you for the service, came to set and held up a bag and went, ‘We caught them and here’s her bag,'” Matthew said.
“And then the young PA was next to me, indeed went, ‘No, no, that’s Matthew’s bag!’ And I was like, ‘Shut up!’ And then they take it out, ‘and here’s her watch.’ And like, ‘No, no, that’s Matthew’s watch!’ I was like, ‘Shut up!'”
In an instant, the secret was well and truly out, and the entire cast discovered that their lead spies had been quietly sharing a flat.
In 2016 Matthew and Keri welcomed their son, Sam into the world as well as revealing their relationship to the public on the Emmy’s red carpet together.
