For the past few days, media circles have been abuzz with reports about the revival of Udayam, the popular Telugu daily of the 1980s, which was established by the late filmmaker Dasari Narayana Rao and was later taken over by Congress MP Magunta Subbarami Reddy.
The newspaper had once given Eenadu a serious run for its money and was regarded as a trendsetter in Telugu journalism. After the deaths of Dasari and Magunta, Udayam gradually lost its prominence and was eventually shut down.
Now, the daily is reportedly set for a revival under a slightly modified name — Prabhata Udayam, with the word “Prabhata” expected to appear less prominently in the masthead.
Senior journalist and former Namaste Telangana editor Katta Sekhar Reddy has announced that he will serve as the editor of Prabhata Udayam. Several other senior journalists have also taken to social media to say that they are joining the publication.
The key question now is who exactly owns and promotes the revived Udayam daily.
According to records of the Press Registrar General of India, Prabhata Udayam is registered as a Telugu daily in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The Telangana registration was recorded on May 5, 2026, while the Andhra Pradesh registration was recorded on August 10, 2026.
Corporate records show that Prabhata Udayam Media & Publications Private Limited was incorporated in May 2026, with Vamshi Krishna Vemuri and Vinuthna Vemuri listed as directors.
Sources claim that Vemuri Vamshi Krishna is the nephew of Andhra Jyothy Managing Director Vemuri Radha Krishna. This has triggered speculation that Radha Krishna himself could be behind the revival of Udayam as part of a broader expansion of his media business interests.
Interestingly, Vamshi Krishna is also said to be a close friend of Vennam Vijaykanth Reddy, promoter of Big TV. Vamshi Krishna reportedly has a stake in the channel as well.
Vijaykanth Reddy is also the brother of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary Vennam Srikanth Reddy. In addition, Vemuri Vamshi and Vennam Vijaykanth jointly run a company called Winspire Campaigns, which is said to handle digital campaign activities linked to Revanth Reddy.
The two are also associated with another company called Savvy Media. This company was reportedly awarded live-streaming rights for Telangana government programmes, with the contracts said to be worth crores of rupees.
The larger question now is whether Vemuri Radha Krishna has any indirect stake in the upcoming Telugu daily.
The newspaper’s political positioning, editorial line and ownership structure are likely to attract considerable attention as Prabhata Udayam moves closer to its operational launch.
