Paul Mescal spotted filming in Liverpool street

Hollywood actor Paul Mescal has been spotted cycling through a Liverpool street while filming the highly anticipated Beatles biopic project. The actor, who is playing Sir Paul McCartney, was seen in character in Woolton today, Thursday, September 17, as cameras rolled for Sir Sam Mendes’ ambitious four-film series about the Fab Four.

Footage captured by Sameera showed Mescal cycling down a Woolton street dressed in a light blue shirt, beige blazer and black trousers. The actor was also sporting the iconic 1960s-style bowl cut associated with Sir Paul during The Beatles’ early years.

Classic cars lined the street while extras dressed in period clothing could also be seen walking through the scene, helping to transform the Liverpool road into a snapshot of the 1960s.

Sameera shared the footage on TikTok alongside the caption: “I fear the street has peaked.”

Today’s filming is the latest in a series of Beatles-related shoots across Liverpool as production continues on the major Hollywood project.

Sir Sam announced the plans in February 2024, revealing that he would direct four interconnected films, with each one telling the story of The Beatles from the perspective of an individual band member.

The ambitious cinematic event has the backing of Sony Pictures, with permission granted by Sir Paul and Sir Ringo Starr, as well as the estates of the late John Lennon and George Harrison.

Barry Keoghan will play Sir Ringo, Harris Dickinson will star as Lennon and Joseph Quinn will depict Harrison.

The films will chart the extraordinary rise of the Liverpool band, their worldwide success and their eventual break-up, with the four stories connecting to form an overarching account of The Beatles.

A host of other big names have also joined the cast. Saoirse Ronan is playing Linda McCartney, while Anna Sawai will portray Yoko Ono and Aimee Lou Wood is playing Pattie Boyd. Mia McKenna-Bruce will take on the role of Maureen Starkey.

Liverpool actor David Morrissey is also appearing as Sir Paul’s father, Jim McCartney, while Happy Valley star James Norton has been cast as Beatles manager Brian Epstein.

Filming has already taken place at a number of locations across Liverpool.

Camera crews were spotted on City Road in Walton earlier this year, where large screens were erected around the filming area. Production has also visited Menlove Avenue in Woolton, outside the former home of Lennon.

Mescal has previously been seen transformed into Sir Paul during filming at Lennon’s childhood home, while Leanne Best, who plays Lennon’s aunt Mimi Smith, was also spotted in the window of the famous property.

The production has also travelled beyond Liverpool. Earlier this month, filming took place in London, where streets were transformed to resemble 1960s New York.

Actors were pictured in character as The Plaza Hotel on Fifth Avenue was recreated, complete with screaming fans, police barricades and other period details.

The four Beatles films are currently scheduled to be released in April 2028.
