Police investigate break-in at award-winning Cardiff bakery

The owners of popular Danish bakery Brød said someone went ‘looking for money’ in the early-hours incident

Police are investigating a break in at one of Cardiff’s most popular bakeries.

The owners of award-winning Danish bakery Brød said someone smashed through the glass on the door of their bakery in Cardiff Bay and went around the shop “looking for money”. The incident happened in James Street during the early hours of Thursday morning, September 17.

Brød, which has two other bakeries in the capital and another location in Penarth, said it is a “cashless business” and confirmed no cash is kept at any of their bakeries.

“Times are tough for hospitality businesses,” the owners said in a social media post.

“Margins are tight, running costs are massive, and unexpected costs like repairing a smashed front door are… well, not exactly on the wish list.”

Brød was founded in 2015 by Danish mum and photographer-turned-baker Betina Skovbro. Named after the Danish word for bread, Brød’s stores are filled with fresh pastries and goods made that morning – with the bakers starting weekend shifts at midnight and working until the small hours.

The full post from the business read: “Unfortunately, we had a break-in at our Cardiff Bay store in the early hours. Someone was looking for money.

“We are a cashless business. This is one of the reasons why.

“Times are tough for hospitality businesses. Margins are tight, running costs are massive, and unexpected costs like repairing a smashed front door are… well, not exactly on the wish list.

“So please bear with us while we gather the funds to get the front door reglazed. In the meantime, the wonderful Alice Hawthorne has created a temporary door design for us, which is looking considerably better than a plain sheet of plywood.

“And just to be very clear: there is NO cash at ANY of our premises. If you’re in need of money and you’re awake at 3–4am anyway, we know of quite a few excellent bakeries that could probably use another pair of hands.”

A police spokesman said: “South Wales Police was called at 4.30am on Thursday, September 17, to reports of a break-in at the Brød bakery shop on James Street, Butetown.
