Supermarket giant set to open new Nottingham store near railway station

Sainsbury’s has submitted a council application for the new build

Sainsbury’s is set to open a new store in a former Nottingham office block just minutes from the city’s railway station.

The supermarket giant has applied for a new premises licence for a proposed convenience store at Karlsruhe House on Queensbridge Road.

Documents submitted to Nottingham City Council show the store would be permitted to sell alcohol between 7am and 11pm every day, while the application states the premises could potentially be open to the public 24 hours a day.

Planning permission has already been granted for external building and access alterations to the ground floor of the building to facilitate its use as a convenience shop.

Vanessa Deegan, 31, bartender at The Vat and Fiddle, up the road from Karlsruhe House said: “For local residents and the pub, the new Sainsbury’s will be brilliant. It will be so much more convenient for them rather than having to travel to the city for food.

“Hopefully it will also get us some more customers, if more people are walking down the street.

“We have a lot of people who come in and enquire about jobs, and I think that will help to provide some, especially for the students in the new accommodation blocks.”

The potential plans could also benefit students in the local area.

Joe Cantrill, 18, a student who lives at Signal Place student accommodation just behind Karlsruhe house, said: “I’ll definitely be using it a lot, it has everything you’d need and if I could get a job there that would be really convenient.”

The council are now considering the application before a decision is made.

If approved, the proposed store would bring another convenience shopping option to the area around Nottingham railway station.
