Netflix Just Canceled This Fan-Favorite Show After Five Seasons

Pour it out for Sweet Magnolias.

Netflix has canceled the romantic drama based on book series by Sherryl Woods after five seasons, Deadline reported on September 18. The show, which premiered in May 2020, starred JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Heather Headley, and Brooke Elliott as a trio of longtime friends navigating life and love in the small South Carolina town of Serenity.

Netflix cancels ‘Sweet Magnolias’ after five seasons

The news comes just over three months after the fifth season of Sweet Magnolias dropped on the streamer in June 2026.

“All grand adventures must eventually end,” read a post on an Instagram account run by the show’s writing team. “And here, dear friends, is where ours does. Sweet Magnolias is now complete with five seasons streaming on Netflix … While this journey may be complete, the Sweet Magnolias will always there for you when you need them most. Serenity will always be happy to see you.”

“Nope! Unacceptable! The only thing I want to hear next is that there’s at least going to be a movie to wrap up the storylines. This is downright criminal!” replied one viewer, a sentiment echoed by many other commenters on the post.

“What is going on over at Netflix? They’re cancelling all of the good shows. There’s barely anything good to watch on that platform now,” another disappointed fan wrote in response.

New show produced by JoAnna Garcia Swisher in the works at Netflix

While loyal viewers are undoubtedly disappointed in Netflix’s decision (especially given some unresolved storylines at the end of season 5), they do have something to look forward to. The streamer has greenlit a new series that might fill the Serenity-sized hole in their watchlist.

Ladies of the House is loosely based on Lauren Edmondson’s 2021 novel of the same name, which is itself inspired by Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. Edmondson’s book follows a mother and her two daughters whose lives are rocked when their politician husband/father dies suddenly. While the novel is set in the world of D.C. politics, Netflix’s upcoming adaptation focuses on a family that owns a winery.

Ladies of the House comes from Sheryl J. Anderson, who is Sweet Magnolias‘ executive producer/showrunner. Swisher will also executive produce and may star in the series.

Deadline reports that Netflix was weighing either renewing Sweet Magnolias for a sixth season or moving forward with Ladies of the House, which was already in development. Ultimately, they settled on the new project rather than wrapping up Sweet Magnolias with a sixth season.

All five seasons of Sweet Magnolias are streaming on Netflix.
