Avocado toast will taste better if you sprinkle one everyday kitchen ingredient onto the fruit

Avocado toast is a popular easy breakfast choice, but it can often taste a little bland unless you season it with a simple ingredient most people will already have tucked away in their kitchen cupboard.

Avocado toast has surged in popularity in recent years as a nutritious way to begin the day, yet it can frequently taste rather bland initially if you’re unfamiliar with how to prepare it properly. It’s an incredibly straightforward breakfast that takes under five minutes to put together.

Avocados have garnered widespread attention for their velvety texture and numerous health benefits, though on their own they are actually fairly flavourless. Simply mashing an avocado onto bread without additional ingredients results in a flat-tasting fruit, leaving you with a meal you won’t particularly relish.

However, Joanie Zisk, a chef with over 35 years’ experience and founder of One Dish Kitchen, has revealed that unlocking the natural flavour of avocados is remarkably straightforward — you simply need a touch of salt.

Joanie said: “Kosher or sea salt seasons the avocado and brings out its flavour. A pinch of flaky salt on top adds a bit of crunch.”

Avocados are rich in healthy fats, which lends them a smooth consistency that complements toast beautifully. Salt works to amplify the taste of food, and when applied to an avocado it simply enhances the flavour for a more satisfying breakfast.

Adding salt allows you to detect the creamy, rich and subtly nutty qualities of an avocado without requiring additional ingredients or complex culinary techniques.

Opting for kosher or sea salt is preferable, as their larger crystals give the toast a crunchier and more interesting texture.

Seasoning avocados with salt is the simplest method to enhance their flavour, though it is equally advisable to incorporate a squeeze of lemon juice, which lifts the taste considerably, alongside a drizzle of olive oil, which lends the fruit an even more luxurious, silky consistency.

How to make better avocado toast

You will need:

  • One piece of thick bread
  • Half a large ripe avocado
  • One teaspoon of lemon juice
  • One teaspoon of olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

Method:

Begin by toasting the bread in either a toaster or frying pan until it achieves a golden-brown colour. A thicker variety such as sourdough is preferable where possible, as it supports the avocado and additional toppings far more effectively without turning soggy.

Next, halve an avocado and discard the stone. Scoop the flesh from the skin using a spoon and transfer it to a bowl.

Mash the avocado with a fork until relatively smooth, while retaining some texture for a more satisfying consistency.

Squeeze over some lemon juice and add a drizzle of olive oil, then season generously with salt and pepper. Sample a small amount of the mashed avocado and adjust the seasoning to your preference — you should notice a marked improvement in flavour.

Spread the mashed avocado across the warm toast and serve immediately. Additional toppings can be incorporated according to your taste, including smoked salmon, bacon, eggs (fried, scrambled or poached), chilli flakes or halved cherry tomatoes.

Avocado toast is a wonderfully simple dish to prepare, but mastering the art of seasoning it correctly will reward you with a far superior breakfast to kick off your morning.
