Harry Potter Fan-Favorite Is the World’s Newest Hero as Stealth Sci-Fi Gem Takes Over Streaming

Well Go USA Entertainment’s Altered had a rather quiet release in 2025, debuting in limited theaters in the U.S. last November. Almost a year later, it’s seeing a rise on streaming with new audiences around the world discovering the sci-fi gem.

Currently, Altered is in the global Top 10 Movies list on HBO Max, currently ranked at No. 9 (via FlixPatrol). It’s not available on the platform in the United States, but has gotten its worldwide streaming rise through its availability in other territories. It’s at No. 1 in several regions, including Romania, Bulgaria, and Slovakia. The good news for U.S. viewers wanting to see the film is that it’s available stateside to watch for free on YouTube, Plex, and The Roku Channel. It’s also streaming for subscribers on Prime Video.

Tom Felton Is a Special Kind of Hero in Altered

Harry Potter alum Tom Felton, who rose to fame with his role as Draco Malfoy in the smash-hit fantasy film series, leads the cast of Altered. Written and directed by Timo Vuorensola, Altered also stars Richard Brake (Game of Thrones), Igor Jijikine (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), Aggy K. Adams (The Witcher), Liza Bugulova (Dama s sobachkoy), Sergey Tsyrulnikov, and Aleksey Filimonov (V2: Escape from Hell).

In Altered, the story is set in an alternate reality where genetic enhancement has become commonplace in humanity. People who can afford genetic modifications gain major advantages, while those who are unenhanced have been cast aside to the margins of society. Felton plays Leon, a special kind of hero and an unenhanced outsider who gets involved in a resistance against the genetically enhanced ruling class, uncovering corruption surrounding the system.

Elements of the Story May Be Relatable

“There are so many parallels to what we’re experiencing now,” Felton said about the story in a Pop-Culturalist interview. “One of the great things about genre is how it can make you feel like you’re watching something completely unreal, when in truth, the themes and analogies are deeply human and universally relatable. A film like Jurassic Park is essentially a lesson in ‘Don’t play God.’ There are so many ideas within this film that I hope audiences connect with.”

Critics were not very kind on Altered, but there are some viewers who say it’s underrated. As one audience review on Rotten Tomatoes stated, “It’s always thrilling to see good guys taking matters into their own hands, outthinking their peers, outwitting criminals. Tom Felton (aka old man) has created a cult classic that will be remembered for generations. A quirky sci-fi film that became a masterpiece on a micro budget. This modern Spy Kids merged with RoboCop will entertain generations.”
