Jon Hamm's New Crime Thriller Streaming Hit Has a 90% Rotten Tomatoes Score

Jon Hamm remains the undisputed king of TV, as his latest crime thriller has a knockout Rotten Tomatoes score and is currently one of the biggest shows on streaming. When Hamm first played Don Draper in Mad Men way back in 2007, audiences were introduced to one of the most complex and morally grey TV protagonists since Tony Soprano. As well as being a critical sensation, the show put Hamm on the map. In more recent years, Jon Hamm has led another massive series in Apple TV’s Your Friends & Neighbors, a darkly funny crime thriller. But now, the actor has another acclaimed crime thriller under his belt, and it’s rising up the ranks on streaming.

Just a day after its debut on streaming, Jon Hamm’s new American Hostage is currently one of the biggest shows on streaming. The series is based on the true story of Fred Heckman and Tony Kiritsis. The former (played by Hamm) was a radio presenter in Indianapolis whose reporting on a local hostage situation went far beyond the norm. Tony (played by Giovanni Ribisi) had kidnapped a real-estate developer after a deal had gone wrong, and used Fred’s radio show to air his grievances, voice his demands, and prolong the standoff between himself and the police. American Hostage dramatizes the events, expanding upon Tony’s motives and adding a personal layer to Fred’s involvement in the situation.

‘American Hostage’ Is a Streaming Sensation

The first two episodes of American Hostage debuted on MGM+ on Sept. 20. The series will run for eight episodes, with new episodes releasing weekly on Sundays. Only two episodes have dropped so far, but the show is already a major hit. Releasing directly on MGM+, American Hostage is currently the third most popular series on the streaming platform. From currently holds the top spot, with the new A Tale of Two Cities adaptation in second. Although, expect American Hostage to jump up a spot or two in the coming days.

‘American Hostage’ Is One of Jon Hamm’s Highest-Rated Series

It’s safe to say that none of Hamm’s new shows will likely come close to the success of Mad Men. AMC’s hit series is often regarded as one of the best TV shows of all-time, right up there with The Sopranos and Breaking Bad. But American Hostage deserves its flowers. The series holds a tremendous 90% Rotten Tomatoes score. MovieWeb’s own Christine Persaud rated the series 3.5/5, saying, “The journey is filled with moments of subtlety, quiet intensity, and social commentary. The story is true to the core of the real-life events, with creative liberties taken and dramatic plotlines added for the sake of television entertainment. Even if you know, or think you know, how the story ends, American Hostage is intriguing enough to want to watch the reenactment.”
