Say Goodbye to ABC's High Potential Formula in 2026

ABC is ditching its usual winning formula by keeping High Potential off its fall 2026 schedule, but the hit procedural is not going anywhere. Instead, Season 3 is being held until midseason 2027, allowing the network to give Kaitlin Olson’s series a more consistent weekly run with fewer interruptions once it returns.

The move represents a significant scheduling change for one of ABC’s biggest scripted successes. Premiering in 2024, High Potential stars Olson as Morgan Gillory, a mother whose exceptional intelligence and observational skills help the LAPD Major Crimes Division solve cases. The series has regularly drawn 12 to 17 million total viewers per episode, making its absence from the fall lineup especially notable.

ABC Has Strategically Excluded High Potential From Its Fall Schedule

ABC’s decision to save High Potential for midseason breaks the pattern it followed in its first two years. The series held a prominent place in the network’s previous schedules, but Season 3 will now arrive sometime in 2027 after ABC’s fall slate has already been underway for months.

That later premiere could also affect the season’s overall length. While the first season of High Potential consisted of 13 episodes, which is common for a new network series, Season 2 expanded to a full 18-episode order and gave the show considerably more room for weekly cases and its serialized mysteries.

ABC has not announced an official episode count or premiere date for High Potential Season 3. However, the network has explained that moving the series to midseason is a deliberate decision designed to let Olson’s show air with fewer interruptions, meaning viewers should not have to navigate the extended breaks that can come with a traditional fall-to-spring network schedule.

ABC’s fall lineup still includes established series such as Abbott Elementary, Grey’s Anatomy, and 9-1-1, alongside the new comedy-drama R.J. Decker, which follows a disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con. High Potential isn’t the only notable title being saved for 2027, as the new The Rookie spinoff, The Rookie: North, is also being held until midseason.

What to Expect From High Potential Season 3

When High Potential returns in 2027, it will have several major Season 2 developments to address immediately. Morgan, Detective Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), Lev “Oz” Ozdil (Deniz Akdeniz), and Daphne Forrester (Javicia Leslie) are heading into the aftermath of the finale, which left Captain Nick Wagner (Steve Howey) fighting for his life after Morgan discovered him bleeding from multiple stab wounds.

Wagner joined High Potential Season 2 as the precinct’s new captain, but Steve Howey will not return as a series regular for Season 3. His character’s ultimate fate remains unresolved, though a guest appearance could still allow the series to bring Wagner’s storyline to a proper conclusion.

Another major off-screen change will also shape the new season. Nora and Lilla Zuckerman have taken over as co-showrunners following Todd Harthan’s departure, and production on Season 3 is now underway. Olson and several of her co-stars have already shared behind-the-scenes glimpses from the set as work continues on the episodes that will air in 2027.

The biggest unresolved story remains the mystery surrounding Morgan’s missing ex, Roman. Season 2 did not resolve his disappearance, and the LAPD’s investigation into the corruption surrounding his case remains positioned to play an important role in High Potential’s serialized story when the series returns.

At the same time, Morgan’s relationship with Karadec continues to be one of the show’s biggest long-term dynamics. High Potential Season 3 is positioned to keep developing their partnership following the Season 2 finale. With ABC planning a more concentrated midseason run, those ongoing storylines should have a more consistent weekly rhythm when the show finally returns.
