Marvel’s resident Man Without Fear and guardian of Hell’s Kitchen will be leaving Disney+ as the streamer has announced the upcoming third season of Daredevil: Born Again will be its last.
The Hollywood Reporter announced the news the fan-favourite show would be ending. Production on the third season wrapped during the summer and is in the midst of post-production, though Marvel has also parted ways with showrunner Dario Scardapane after deciding not to renew his contract. The decision to have him exit the series during post-production leaves it undetermined who will oversee the rest of the process, though THR also states the season is in the final stages of post.
Daredevil: Born Again is a continuation of Netflix’s Daredevil series which also ran for three seasons. Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio reprise their roles as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin alongside Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page. The two seasons of Born Again focused on Fisk becoming New York City’s mayor, using his influence and power to create a task force targeting vigilantes while tightening his hold on the city.
The series has seen other characters return from the original including Netflix’s other MCU shows. Jon Bernthal returned as The Punisher in the first season, leading to his special The Punisher: One Last Kill and his role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day while Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter reprised their roles as Jessica Jones and Luke Cage in the second. Ritter and Colter will return along with Finn Jones as Danny Rand/Iron Fist in the third season.
Season two ended with Daredevil and Karen successfully proving Kingpin used his position as mayor to continue his criminal pursuits with Matt Murdock publicly revealing his identity as Daredevil to impeach and arrest Fisk, leading to his exile. However, with his identity public Murdock has been arrested for his vigilante activities and been sent to prison with the same corrupt cops and other criminals he’s helped put away. Season three will presumably see the remaining Defenders try to protect New York while Matt awaits his trial.
Daredevil: Born Again is the latest Marvel series to come to an end after reports of Marvel Studios scaling back its television productions. Wonder Man premiered earlier this year and was renewed for a second season while earning several Emmy nominations, yet despite the acclaim Disney and Marvel decided to walk back on the renewal and cancel the series. As of now the only upcoming Marvel series is VisionQuest with Paul Bettany returning as Vision, completing a trilogy that began with WandaVision and continued in Agatha All Along.
Daredevil: Born Again will premiere its third season in 2027.
