One of the biggest theories surrounding Ahsoka Season 2 just got a serious boost from Dave Filoni, and this could take the series into some of the wildest territory Star Wars has explored in live action.
Filoni has confirmed that the Mortis Gods will factor into the new season, paying off one of the biggest mysteries left hanging after the Season 1 finale.
Considering the characters involved, including Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker, and Baylan Skoll, their return could have enormous consequences for the Force and potentially reshape how we look at Anakin’s destiny.
Ahsoka Season 2 is currently the biggest live-action Star Wars series confirmed to be coming our way. The new season arrives in January, and its trailer has already revealed that Hayden Christensen will return as Anakin Skywalker alongside Ariana Greenblatt as young Ahsoka for another Clone Wars-era flashback.
Exactly what happens during that sequence remains a mystery, but fans have been wondering whether it could connect directly to Mortis.
The Mortis Gods were introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars as three incredibly powerful beings tied to different aspects of the Force. The Daughter represented the light side, the Son represented the dark side, and the Father maintained balance between them.
All three died during the Mortis storyline in The Clone Wars, which seemingly closed the book on them. Then Ahsoka brought Mortis roaring back into the conversation.
The Season 1 finale showed Baylan Skoll standing atop an enormous statue of the Father on Peridea, with statues of the Son and a damaged Daughter nearby. Baylan had spent much of the season searching for a mysterious power calling to him, making the Mortis connection pretty hard to ignore.
Speculation grew after footage from Season 2 included a mysterious figure bearing a striking resemblance to the Son. Now Filoni has confirmed that fans are looking in the right direction.
Speaking with Empire Magazine, Filoni confirmed that the Mortis Gods are “definitely a thing” in Ahsoka Season 2.
Filoni explained: “What we’re dealing with is: are you going to believe in this or not? And what is the danger if it’s real? And how are you going to prioritize your goals here?…What would a Jedi do versus what would a regular person do? Those things come up through the course of the season.”
Filoni also says viewers won’t need to watch The Clone Wars before jumping into Season 2, but you should watch it anyway because it’s awesome! But, Ahsoka will give audiences the information they need to understand Mortis and why these beings matter.
That also makes the upcoming Clone Wars flashback with Anakin and young Ahsoka even more interesting. It’s possible the series could revisit events connected to Mortis in live action, perhaps showing viewers what happened there through a new perspective. For now, though, that remains speculation.
The bigger question is what the return of Mortis means for Anakin and Ahsoka. One fan theory proposes that the deaths of the original Mortis Gods created positions that eventually need to be filled. Under that theory, Anakin could become the new Father, Ahsoka the Daughter, and Baylan the Son.
It sounds crazy until you start looking at how the pieces could fit. Anakin was originally asked by the Father to remain on Mortis and replace him, maintaining balance between the Son and Daughter.
Ahsoka also has an unusual connection to the Daughter after the Daughter sacrificed herself and transferred her remaining life force into Ahsoka during The Clone Wars. Baylan, meanwhile, has now been directly connected to the Mortis imagery while pursuing whatever mysterious power is calling him.
If Ahsoka Season 2 takes the story in that direction, it could offer a fascinating new interpretation of Anakin bringing balance to the Force. It could also potentially explain why Anakin’s Force ghost and Ahsoka are absent from the sequel trilogy.
There’s still a big difference between Filoni confirming the Mortis Gods and confirming that Anakin, Ahsoka, and Baylan will replace them. That part remains firmly in fan-theory territory.
If the Father, Son, and Daughter are only the beginning, things could get very interesting very fast.
