A Coventry pub that recently announced its closure has already been sold, former owners confirmed.
The Phoenix on Gosford Street, fondly known locally as The Campbell, is closing its doors next month. We can now reveal Stonegate who owned the pub, has already sold the building after a ‘review’ of its estate.
The company, one of the biggest of its kind in the country, says the decision has not been taken lightly, particularly considering the venue’s history – it has been a working pub for around 300 years.

A Stonegate spokesman told Coventry Live: “Following a review of our estate, we can confirm that we have agreed the sale of The Phoenix in Coventry. Decisions to divest venues are never taken lightly, particularly given The Phoenix’s long-standing place within the local community.
“However, we keep our portfolio under constant review to ensure strategic alignment across our wider pub estate. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our dedicated site team and to all our loyal guests who have supported the pub over the years.
“Our priority now is supporting our team members through this transition, including exploring redeployment opportunities within the group wherever possible.”
At this stage, the identity of the buyer is unknown which does little to give assurances on the historic venue’s future.
In recent years the pub has been heavily associated with the city’s student population. It has also always played a big part in the local grassroots music scene.
