A Coventry pub is at risk of closure as a landlady is set to leave the business.
Theresa McCarthy took over the Rose and Woodbine in North Street towards the end of last year after the pub had closed earlier in 2025.
But now Stonegate has confirmed that the publican is ‘preparing to leave’ the business. It has not given reasons for the departure.
But a spokesman for the firm did say it’s hoped that a new publican will be found soon and that there will be no need to close the pub.
Stonegate is actively advertising for a new partnership tenancy and states the Stoke-based pub has a forecast turnover of £443,099 a year and a guide rent of £384 per week.
It adds that the venue is a ‘core community pub’ with a beer garden, smoking area, pool and darts facilities. A spokesman said: “The pub also benefits from having good living accommodation with an additional lounge, bathroom, toilet and three separate bedrooms.”
In a statement, a spokesman for Stonegate said: “ We are currently working with the existing publican as they prepare to leave the business and hope to welcome a new publican without any period of closure. Anyone interested in taking on the Rose and Woodbine can find out more via the Stonegate Pub Partners website.”
Theresa told CoventryLive last year that taking over the Rose and Woodbine was a ‘dream come true’. The pub had previously closed earlier in 2025 due to increasing financial pressures.
It’s the latest Stonegate venue in Coventry to run into difficulties. The Town Wall Tavern closed in July just over a year after reopening under new management. The landlord said ongoing issues with owners Stonegate led to a decision to move on.
And The Phoenix on Gosford Street announced it would be closing after Stonegate sold it under a ‘review’ of its estate.
