Tamil Nadu’s ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) faces an important electoral test in the Dharapuram Assembly bypoll, where a multi-cornered contest and changing political alliances are set to test the party’s organisational strength.
The bypoll assumes added significance as Chief Minister Vijay’s TVK does not have an outright majority in the 234-member Assembly. TVK won 108 seats in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Dharapuram went to a bypoll after P Sathyabama, who had won the constituency on an AIADMK ticket earlier this year, resigned as MLA and joined TVK. She is now contesting the same seat as the ruling party’s candidate.
Her principal rivals include DMK’s S Suganya, AIADMK’s K Bhanumathi, CPI’s P Lakshmanan and Naam Tamilar Katchi’s M Karthika, making it a five-cornered contest among the major parties.
In the 2026 Assembly election, Sathyabama secured 81,100 votes as the AIADMK candidate, defeating DMK’s P Indirani, who polled 64,373 votes, by a margin of 16,727. TVK’s S Gowri Chithra finished third with 46,438 votes, representing 23.23 per cent of the vote. NTK’s P Divya secured 6,026 votes.
Those figures provide the backdrop to TVK’s attempt to consolidate its support in the constituency.
The CPI’s decision to contest separately adds another dimension to the election. The Left party is contesting Dharapuram independently despite its broader political positioning in the state, adding another competitor to an already fragmented field.
Sathyabama’s decision to resign shortly after winning the seat on an AIADMK ticket has also become a campaign issue, with AIADMK workers protesting against her during the nomination process. Whether that dissatisfaction translates into a significant electoral impact will become clear only after the votes are counted.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami and DMK leaders are expected to intensify their respective campaigns, while Chief Minister Vijay is also scheduled to campaign actively in the constituency.
The Election Commission has scheduled polling in Dharapuram and Madurantakam for October 6, with counting on October 9.
The result will provide an early indication of how TVK’s support has evolved since the Assembly elections, particularly as the party contests with a former AIADMK MLA against candidates from the DMK, AIADMK, CPI and NTK.
