If you’re looking for the “cutest day trip from Birmingham”, you need to visit this town that has been described as a “fairytale”. Getting out and exploring parts of the UK you’ve never seen before can be hugely rewarding, especially if you have children and are getting sick of taking them to the same places every weekend.
Most of us can’t just drive to the other end of the country in one day to be back in time for tea, but there are plenty of hidden gems close to home that can make the perfect day out. One adorable town, just 45 minutes from Birmingham, has been praised as looking like a “fairytale” by one woman online, who recommended everyone go and visit.
Bethan, who regularly shares travel videos on Instagram, shared a clip recently that documented her trip to Shrewsbury, a historic medieval market town in Shropshire, which takes under an hour to drive to from Birmingham.
Filming the sights she came across, including bookshops, rivers, and historic buildings, Bethan wrote: “This fairytale town is only 45 minutes from Birmingham.”
In her video, Bethan visited sites around the town of Shrewsbury, including The Quarry, a 29-acre parkland filled with vibrant flower gardens, and Butcher Row, a small space comprised of a grass verge and some historical buildings.

She also visited Bear Steps cafe and Welsh Bridge collectables, two shops in Shrewsbury that looked very charming when shared in Bethan’s video. But that’s not all there is to do in the town that’s steeped in history.
Shrewsbury is home to the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery, as well as the Soden Collection, which is a mix of British art and sculpture. There’s also the Theatre Severn and The Hive for those who like theatre and live entertainment.
There’s plenty for history buffs to enjoy, too, with Shrewsbury Prison, which has been awarded the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award for nine years running, Shrewsbury Castle, and Shrewsbury Abbey.
The guided tour of Shrewsbury Prison has an almost perfect Tripadvisor rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars coming from over 2,000 reviews, as visitors say the tour is “informative” and the guides are “fantastic”.
One person said: “My husband and I went on the guided tour of Shrewsbury Prison. Michelle was our tour guide, and she was fantastic! Her talk was interesting and informative, and gave an excellent insight into the Prison history and inmates.
“The length of the visit was just right. It was an hour and a half. The Prison is well preserved. The Cafe offered a variety of food and drink, all reasonably priced.”
Another added: “So interesting and informative. Malcolm really made the tour good by telling the stories. Would definitely recommend.”
For those who just want to experience nature with a day walking around The Quarry Park, Tripadvisor reviewers also heaped praise on the area, stating it is “peaceful” and a “lovely place to visit”.
One wrote: “A beautiful, well-maintained park beside the River Severn. The Dingle was an absolutely beautiful place to visit.”
Another said: “Visited here a couple of times during our stay in Shrewsbury. Lovely park and a nice walk along the river. Wide open space. Toilet facilities and a takeaway cafe near the entrance with ice cream on offer. Be sure to visit Dingle Gardens. We bought lunch and ate it here. It was lovely.”
