What is it?
The Line 6 Helix hardware was a pretty big deal when it initially launched back in 2015. It made professional-grade modeling tones available to the masses, spawning a number of off-shoots including the HX Stomp, HX Effects, HX One and more. It was only natural that a plugin version was on the cards. Cue Helix Native in 2017 – a plugin that boasted all of the same tones that made the Helix such a hit. Things have since moved on, with the recent release of the Helix Stadium XL hardware featuring Line 6’s revamped Agoura amp modeling, and this year has seen the plugin catch up with Helix Stadium Native.
The deal remains the same in that we are getting tones identical to the hardware, but in plugin form, and Line 6 has also created a free Helix Stadium Intro version for you to try. As a regular user of Helix Native and having previously reviewed the Helix Stadium XL hardware, it is fair to say that I am expecting a lot here.

Installation is fairly straightforward and just a case of downloading the file and activating your license through the Line 6 website. Easy, and a nice break from some other, often more convoluted methods of license activation.
Upon opening the plugin, things initially look exactly the same as the previous version. The signal chain is clearly displayed to the right, with storage slots for your presets and impulse responses to the left, and menus to select various effect blocks, along with big and easy-to-understand visual sliders to adjust parameters at the bottom.
Blocks are selected on the signal chain, populated from the menu, and can then be dragged and dropped around the chain. If you are coming from the Helix or Helix Stadium hardware, this will all be very familiar, and even if you are not, it is pretty foolproof.
Having said that, it feels odd that you can’t drag an effect from the menu directly onto that chain, given the drag-and-drop nature of the chain once you’ve loaded an effect in.
A more serious issue is that the plugin does not scale to reflect the higher-resolution monitor on my Windows machine. The picture is perfect on my 1920×1080 monitor, but the text and icons are awkwardly small on my 2560×1440 monitor. It should be noted that this is not an issue on the MacOS version of the plugin.
While there are some cumbersome ways to work around the scaling issue, we shouldn’t have to use those workarounds on a $399 piece of software.
Something that we have seen become more commonplace in recent years is the ability for plugins to run as a standalone applications, take Neural DSP’s Archetype: Misha Mansoor X, or Positive Grid Bias X, for example.
It’s a function I was hoping to see on the new upgraded Stadium plugin, but alas, it is not to be. Not a huge deal, but as more and more players are going ampless, the ability to run plugins standalone is relevant to how a lot of new players are learning, so I feel this is a bit of a missed opportunity, especially considering the plugin’s price.
On to the good stuff, there are a number of improvements and useful additions. For example, the UI improves upon its predecessor in the ability to swap those sliders out for depictions of control knobs. This looks a little bit more modern and gives the plugin a real-world feel.
Also, located just underneath the signal chain is the button to activate Focus view. This is an innovative way of allowing the user to adjust multiple parameters at once to get to a certain sound.
To do this, the signal chain is replaced by a sleek, high-definition image representing the individual block being edited, and split into five zones named according to the function of the effect or amp – things like Clean, Rock Rhythm, and Lead, for example.
A cursor appears in the centre of the image, which is then dragged by the user into these zones to change parameters to reflect the zone’s title.
In short, it is a quick and easy way to get to a tone you want. For example, the Ampeg SVT model has zones named Growl, Scooped, Classic, Mid Bite and Fat. Draggging the cursor towards Growl will give you a driven bass sound, towards scooped will remove some mids and so on.
Furthermore, the user can watch these parameters change in real time. This means it isn’t a mindless exercise of getting the software to do the work, but a process from which you can learn what parameters you need to adjust to get to a certain sound.
On some blocks where this approach may not make sense, Focus view instead provides a visual interface. For example, it can display the associated graph on a graphic EQ or an image of a mic being dragged around on a cab. All handy touches.
Another strength of the plugin is just the sheer number of things available to you. Featuring 260+ effects, 132 + amp models including all the previous HX versions, as well as Line 6’s Proxy Capture tech.
Proxy is Line 6’s first foray into this type of technology, and something I am looking forward to checking out. However, you cannot create Clones (Line 6’s name for Proxy capture files) with the Native software. Some may find this a bit disappointing considering that other formats, such as IK Multimedia’s Tonex, can create versions of capture files on a desktop.
Still, this does not change the fact that there is more than enough variety to make Helix Stadium Native a one-stop shop for everything guitar. If the sounds are up to scratch, that is.

The main news and the biggest upgrade from the previous version of Native is the Agoura amp models. Named after the area of Calabasas, California, where Line 6 is headquartered, these models are more than just an updated version of their HX predecessors – they are an entirely new way of doing things.
They use sub-component behavior modeling to accurately recreate a digital model of real-world amplifiers, and feature communication between the amp and cab blocks that reflects the interaction between the two things in real life.
The Agoura models react much more as an amp would
Native is particularly adept at showing the difference between the two versions as it hosts both the new Agoura models and the older HX versions, so I load up the US Double Black Agoura model on its Vibrato channel and compare it to the US Double Vib legacy model.
Tonally, they are relatively similar, both reflecting the scooped sound of a Fender Twin Reverb, with the Agoura model being noticeably smoother in the high end and free from the spikiness of the legacy model.
Boosting with the Screamer 808 is where the difference really stands out. The Screamer sounds rather thin and unpleasant through the legacy model, but fat and smooth through the Agoura. In short, the Agoura reacts much more like an amp would with a Tube Screamer-type stompbox in front of it.
To Line 6’s credit, the company regularly brought meaningful updates to the Helix firmware, so these differences are less pronounced when using the more recent HX models. For example, the Panama Red (EVH 5150 III), which was added in 2024, is much closer in quality to the new Agoura version. In fact, I find myself preferring the smoother mid-range of the HX model.
Aside from this outlier, the Agoura models have the edge, with subtle improvements in dynamic response pervading. All in all, they just feel a little more alive under the fingers.
A welcome new addition to the Agoura models is the Hype control. It takes the focus away from direct clones of real-world models and moves towards creating idealized versions of these amplifiers.
It’s a sliding scale, meaning the more of the Hype Control that you dial in, the closer to the ideal (or what Line 6 has deemed as ideal) version the tone gets.
This is somewhat objective, and for me is a bit hit or miss. For example, I like the liveliness Hype brings to the Princess 76 (Princeton) model, but dislike how it lessens the trademark mid-scoop of the Double Black (Fender Twin) model.
Overall, I feel this is a positive step for digital amplification. Forward-thinking amp brands are always trying to refine and improve their sounds, and one of the benefits of modeling amps is that they can do this without the restraints of physical hardware. The Hype control is a good way to make use of this.
Line 6’s fully original digital models like the Litigator have been well received in the past; therefore, it seems to me that digital guitar tone has real potential to move away from direct clones of real amps into high-end original tones, without the physical restrictions of using actual parts.
Having noted Line 6’s form for bringing meaningful updates, there are already three new amplifiers to check out from the 1.2 Stadium update: US Super Black, Kali 2 C+, and Brit Jujubi.
I find myself particularly enjoying the Brit Jujubi, and it quickly becomes my favourite Marshall in Native due to the slightly warmer take on the JCM800 sound.
The Super Black requires a bit of work, as the high end can be brittle, but it yields a rewarding clean once some time is spent here. I also find the Hype control helpful for bringing the high end into a place where it adds some life without sounding shrill.
The opposite is true of the Kali 2 C+, which boasts an addictive, heavily saturated Mesa drive with hardly any tweaking. Sticking on a backing track, I spend what is probably a little too much time shredding away on this endlessly fun tone.
Both the Jujubi and the Kali 2 C+ make use of the Agoura model’s ability to host multiple amp channels within the same model, particularly the Jujubi, which boasts four channels running the gamut from clean to all-out saturation.
Getting started with the Proxy Clones, I download a Soldano SLO 100 and a Dumble amp and cab Clone, plus a Fender Princeton amp-only clone and find the results to be mixed. The Soldano provides a soaring drive perfect for heavy rhythms with a ton of high-end presence. Stick the Screamer 808 model in front of it, and the high end is tamed, the midrange is pushed forward slightly, and that drive tips into saturation, leading to a perfect, 80’s-inspired lead tone.
The Dumble, however, is thin with an ugly hiss, and the Princeton is a little bit muddy until I back off the pre-gain, at which point it turns into a lovely, glassy Fender clean. So, as with all iterations of capture-based technology, the results very much depend on the quality of the capture.
Still relatively early on in Proxy’s life, there are not many sounds to choose from compared to more established offerings from the likes of Kemper and Tonex. As things stand, and particularly considering there is no rating system to discern the good from the bad, I would opt to use Native’s digital models over the Proxy clones, but there is certainly some potential here.
When it comes to digital effects, Line 6 has rightfully been on the receiving end of praise from users and ourselves, so it adopted the ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach and directly ported the HX effects into the Stadium hardware, and now Stadium Native.
We’ve covered these effects extensively in products like the Helix Floor, HX Effects, and HX One, to name just a few in the ever-growing Helix family. Highlights for me include the Hot Springs reverb, which accurately recreates the drip of a spring reverb, with a vast array of options that will suit any obsessive tweaker.
Also, the simple but effective Transient Delay, which is a Line 6 original that impressively mimics the way an analog delay darkens on repeats. And the PlastiChorus, another Line 6 Original that adds some pleasing wobble whilst not overshadowing the transient of your pick attack.
There are a few effects I am not a fan of. The pitch effects sound a little thin, with the exception of the Pitch Wham, which does retain a sound with plenty of girth. Also, there is a little warble introduced in effects like the Poly Capo. Still useful in a pinch if you’re recording for a singer who changes key on you at the last minute, but certainly not a go-to for this.
The drives offer a huge amount of variety
The drives offer a huge amount of variety, ranging from subtle boosts to all-out distortion and various flavours of fuzz pedals. Some, like the Prize Drive, are convincing replicas of the real-life units they are based on, while others like the Arbiter Fuzz are a load of fun in their own right, but differ from the originals they are copying. In this case, the model is more ‘spitty’ than a real Fuzz Face.
I find myself enjoying the mid-hump of the Screamer 808 to boost amps like the aforementioned Brit Jujubi, and the Teemah! for a versatile, relatively high-gain drive on a clean amp.
Verdict
$399 is a lot of money for a plugin. However, this is vastly capable plugin. From squeaky clean Fender-inspired sounds to over-the-top metal distortion and outlandish synth, it leaves no stone unturned in the land of guitar tone.
And of course, I would be remiss not to mention that users of the Helix Stadium hardware and the previous version of Helix Native can pick up the plugin at a hugely reduced price of $99. POD farm users also benefit from a discounted price – $299 for standard users, $199 for Platinum users.
At $399, however, there is very little room for error. A UI that does not scale properly on certain monitors when using Windows machines is a big misstep, and extra disappointing considering this is not a new issue.

Also, with brands like IK Multimedia able to create captures through its Tonex desktop software, some may be disappointed by the lack of the ability to create Proxy Clones with Stadium Native.
This, combined with the different prices, creates two separate propositions. At $99, Native is a no-brainer. At $399, you might want to consider how much of a drawback these criticisms are and how much you will use the wide array of tones available here.
It is worth bearing in mind too that Line 6 has also released Helix Stadium Native Intro. A massively cut-down version of the plugin that is completely free.
What is undeniable, however, is that if you are someone who is regularly recording music of varying styles, Helix Stadium Native will be hard to beat as a one-stop shop for everything guitar.
Guitar World verdict: While things like the scaling issue on some Windows monitors and the lack of ability to run as a standalone app may put a few people off at the full $399 price, it is no exaggeration to say that Stadium Native can cover every style of music. When it comes to guitar sounds, it is a truly complete suite of professional-grade tones and may be the only guitar plugin you will ever need.
