Wonka’s The Golden Ticket is officially streaming on Netflix!
The new reality competition series, inspired by Roald Dahl‘s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the classic 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, premiered on Wednesday (September 23).
The show brings 12 Golden Ticket winners and their partners inside a massive recreation of Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, where they’ll compete for a huge cash prize.
So, how does the competition work, who appears on the show and how can you watch?
How to Watch Wonka’s The Golden Ticket
Wonka’s The Golden Ticket is streaming exclusively on Netflix.
The first seven episodes were released on September 23, with the two-part finale set to arrive one week later on Wednesday, September 30.
That means Season 1 consists of nine episodes total.
How Does Wonka’s The Golden Ticket Work?
The competition begins with 12 Golden Ticket winners, each of whom brings a partner of their choosing into the Chocolate Factory.
Like in the movie, they each received a chocolate bar.
“Many people received chocolate bars, but only 12 received the golden ticket,” showrunner Alison Holloway told Tudum.
Once inside, the contestants face games, tests and temptations designed to challenge them physically, mentally and morally as they make their way through the factory.
Only one contestant will ultimately win what the show calls a “lifetime supply of money.”
Netflix revealed that the prize is actually $3 million, paid as a six-figure annuity over 30 years.
The factory itself is massive. Netflix says the production built an 88,000-square-foot set across three studios on Australia’s Gold Coast, complete with a 27,000-gallon “chocolate” river and two miles of lickable wallpaper.
Does Wonka’s The Golden Ticket Have a Host?
There’s no traditional host on Wonka’s The Golden Ticket.
Instead, the late Gene Wilder‘s voice has been recreated for the series as Willy Wonka, with permission from his estate.
Gene, who died in 2016, famously played the character in 1971’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.
His widow Karen Wilder gave the production permission to recreate his voice, and provided old recordings and audiobooks to help with the process.
We previously reported that the production worked with AI voice company ElevenLabs to recreate Gene‘s voice.
The show also features some familiar TV personalities.
Howie Mandel, Nick Cannon and Wayne Brady appear via hologram to host different games inside Wonkavision 2.0, including “Wheel of Misfortune,” “Bubble Jeopardy” and “Steal or no Steal.”
There’s another connection to the original movie: Rusty Goffe, who played an Oompa-Loompa in the 1971 film, returns as an Oompa-Loompa for the new series.
