Juliet and Romeo is now at the Bristol Old Vic
Cast your expectations aside, this latest production of Romeo & Juliet reimagines this iconic romantic play in ways you never imagined.
I guess it all starts with the name, with the Lost Dog production calling the bold show “Juliet & Romeo”. It appears the famous couple didn’t die in a tragic misunderstanding; instead, they are gripped by the struggles many long-term couples face.
So, having tried therapy, couple’s therapy, ayahuasca and everything else they could think of, Juliet – played by Emily Terndrup – and Romeo – played by John Kendall – decide to stage their memories as a way to try and work through their current struggles. And they are ones that will deeply resonate with many.
Its bravery and fearlessness is certainly one of the key features of the show; it is certainly a very unique, creative take on the classic. While I was very much gripped at the start, some elements of the show didn’t really connect with me. However, while I found some parts slightly over the top and cringey, I was clearly in the minority judging from the audience’s reaction.
Directed by award-winning director/choreographer Ben Duke, there is a strong focus on dance and humour and you will definitely find yourself laughing repeatedly. Shorter than your usual Shakespeare show, Juliet & Romeo feels fast-paced and dynamic; to start off, it runs for 75 minutes and has no interval so there is no time for messing around.
There is also no old-fashioned English, which was much appreciated by a non-native English speaker like me, with language having been a barrier at other times when watching Shakespeare shows.
It is a brave take on the classic, and one I will not forget for a while.
