While fall always feels like an invitation to retreat into our black and brown outfits, the 2026 fashion trends are asking us to embrace a little more color and pair unexpected hues together. The colors that go with navy blue best this fall, for example, are unlike anything we’ve seen before. These surprising combos make the outfits feel more alive, which is a perfect way to combat the doom-and-gloom weather outside.
A slew of runway shows, some inspiring street style looks, and the opportunity to dress in more layers have me amped to embrace a little more creativity this season. And so I’ll be adding more bright, expressive colors to my wardrobe. Some of the hues typically associated with summer, including orange and pink, are taking center stage this fall. And as much as I take comfort in muted tones, dressing in tomato-red sweaters or a royal purple coat feels adventurous without being over-the-top.
As for one of the biggest color trends I’ve noticed this year? Navy blue. Not in its nautical form—but rather combined with such colors as pink, gold, and gray. Perhaps the most practical way to style navy, at least for the risk-averse, is with the color gray. It neither clashes with nor takes away from the blue, serving as a supporting actor rather than sharing the spotlight. To round out the look further, I recommend layering a lighter shade of blue underneath. It helps add a little visual dimension and looks so smart and put-together.
