One name known across Wales is Catherine Zeta-Jones as the actress often dazzles when she appears on our screens, with many fans having made the same comment about one of her recent roles. The actress, who turns 57 on September 25, is loved by people across Wales, and was brought up in Swansea.

However, even though you may know her for her roles in The Darling Buds of May, Chicago and The Mask of Zorro, you may have never stopped to think about where her unusual name comes from. Apparently, there’s a story behind the name Catherine Zeta-Jones, and it’s rather interesting too.

However, little you may know, there’s actually a story behind her name. It carries more meaning than you may realise.

What does it mean?

According to reports, her name actually comes from her grandmothers. Her maternal grandmother was Catherine Fair.

Meanwhile, her grandmother on her father’s side was called Zeta Jones. If you didn’t know, the name Zeta is of Greek origin.

So, there you have it. While her name may be unique, it actually carries great significance to the family.

She was named after two very important women. Together, they helped to inspire her name.

How did she start acting?

Catherine was very young when she debuted her talent. When she was a child, she played the main role in Annie at Swansea’s Grand Theatre.

During her youth, she also starred in a production of Bugsy Malone. She was just 14 when she impressed Mickey Dolenz during an audition for a role in The Pyjama Game.

Dolenz then gave her a chance to take part in the show for the rest of its tour. She went on to work on various other projects, but one show led her to rise to fame in the UK.

She shot into the spotlight when she was cast as Mariette Larkin in ITV‘s 1991 television adaptation of HE Bates’ The Darling Buds Of May. It was here that she worked with David Jason and Pam Ferris.
