Sydney Sweeney‘s NSFW box office hit, The Housemaid, is officially moving to a new streaming home. The erotic thriller that dominated theaters with over $400 million worldwide has locked in its next platform and debut date after its run on Starz.
The Housemaid to stream on HBO Max next month
Lionsgate’s The Housemaid will begin streaming on HBO Max on October 9, according to a press release from Warner Bros. Discovery. The erotic psychological thriller, directed by Paul Feig, stars Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins.
The film follows Millie, played by Sweeney, who accepts a live-in housemaid position for the wealthy Nina and Andrew Winchester. What starts as a promising job quickly turns dangerous as secrets emerge behind closed doors. Rebecca Sonnenshine wrote the screenplay, adapting it from Freida McFadden’s 2022 bestselling novel of the same name.
The Housemaid originally premiered at the Axa Equitable Center in New York City on December 2, 2025. Lionsgate then released it theatrically in the United States on December 19, 2025. The film later arrived on VOD on February 3, 2026, and on DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray on March 17, 2026.
The thriller performed strongly at the global box office, earning approximately $400.5 million worldwide against a reported $35 million budget. It grossed around $126.4 million domestically and roughly $274.1 million internationally. On Rotten Tomatoes, 74% of 201 critics’ reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.3 out of 10.
Todd Lieberman, Laura Fischer, and Paul Feig produced the film under the Hidden Pictures and Pretty Dangerous Pictures banners. Lionsgate greenlit a sequel in January 2026, with Feig and Sweeney set to return.
The sequel will adapt McFadden’s The Housemaid’s Secret and is currently set for a December 17, 2027, release. Kirsten Dunst has joined the cast for the follow-up.
