Taylor Swift’s July wedding to Travis Kelce dominated headlines for weeks—but now, she’s changing the conversation. In four new songs—bonus tracks from her most recent album, The Life of a Showgirl—Swift travels from the ancient city of “Babylon” to middle America, “Cleveland!”
She sings of both Kelce’s hometown (where the couple recently purchased a $5 million home) and his podcast with his older brother, fellow NFL player Jason: “He already took me to Cleveland, and showed me The Heights / so hate all you like, this is the love of my life,” Swift says, embracing the cheesy, cringe-but-free lifestyle she vowed to keep embracing on her last album. In a refrain toward the end of the song, Swift sings, “He already took me to Cleveland, now I’m wearing white / So hate all you like, this is the love of my life.” That, of course, references her and Kelce’s Adam Sandler–officiated Madison Square Garden nuptials, which divided the internet over the summer.
According to Swift, Kelce has been handling the scrutiny beautifully: “You only need to find one person in this entire world who doesn’t find you completely insufferable,” she sings, “and I have an important announcement to make: I found mine.” Swift does have a special knack for saying the quiet part out loud.
This four-track extension of The Life of a Showgirl is a microcosm of the Taylor Swift experience—featuring two songs where she sheds the past, and two others where she reminds herself to embrace the present. “You’re using nostalgia as a weapon to hurt yourself / But darling, you end up hurting everybody else,” Swift sings in the final track, “Babylon.”
Swift does, however, take a different posture on “Pink Clouding,” a regretful song that seems to reference her brief relationship with actor Tom Hiddleston, shortly after a messy public split from Calvin Harris. The phrase “pink clouding” has been linked to a euphoric “honeymoon” phase of recovery, an early period marked by intense optimism and overconfidence. Swift and Hiddleston’s whirlwind connection was intense but did not last. “Years later, I still wonder how to tell you sorry / I didn’t wanna let you down,” she sings in one verse. “And you were so good / That’s why you haunt me like you should,” Swift admits in another.
Swift seems to have gained some perspective on that past relationship, as well as another previous love. On lead single “Patient Zero,” she sings about bonding with someone over a mutual ex’s toxic behavior. Early internet speculation interprets this as a message to Game of Thrones actor Sophie Turner, who lived in Swift’s Tribeca apartment in September 2023 as Turner was divorcing singer Joe Jonas. Swift dated Jonas back in 2008. “Taylor was an absolute hero to me this year,” Turner told British Vogue in May 2024. “I’ve never been more grateful to anyone than I am for her because she took my children and me, and provided us with a home and a safe space. She really has a heart of gold.”
