The 29th season of South Park has received a massive ratings boost. This comes after Trey Parker and Matt Stone changed the name of the show to South America.
Per an exclusive update from Variety, the latest season of South Park has garnered 4.2 million viewers in a span of three days. The number combined the total viewership across Paramount+ and Comedy Central in the U.S. While the number of viewers has remained steady from the last season (4.3 million in three days), significant improvements were noticed for viewers aged between 18 and 49.
Analyzing the demographic, South Park Season 29 made a 33% jump with a 0.97 rating in the first three days. This is quite an increase from Season 28, which only had a 0.73 rating. Additionally, the premiere episode of the show on cable became the most-watched in the aforementioned age range. South Park was also mentioned 63000 times in three days. A massive jump of 40% over Season 28’s numbers after a similar timeline.
Why did South Park change its name to South America?
South Park officially changed the name of the show to South America for Season 29. Such a step was taken by the creators of the sitcom series to mock the President of America, Donald Trump. The name was changed to take a shot at Trump and his administration, who have reportedly changed the names of several geographical locations by adding America to the names.
Trump and his administration changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America. Adding to that, he also announced that Lake Ontario will be referred to as Lake America.
To announce this decision, creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker shared a statement that read, according to Variety, “Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of ‘South Park’ to ‘South America.’ We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.”
