Fallout fans have been forced to wait very patiently since the release of the last numbered title. Fallout 4 released all the way back in 2015 and, since then, all fans have been given is 2018’s controversial Fallout 76, a couple of small spin-off titles, and an admittedly very popular and successful television adaptation, starring Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, and Aaron Monten.
Now, eleven years later, Bethesda is finally giving fans an update on Fallout 5. Despite what doubters may think, it is still being developed, and it will be releasing, even if it isn’t at the very top of Bethesda’s priority list, with The Elder Scrolls VI currently demanding the majority of their attention.
Fallout 5 was first discussed by Bethesda’s Todd Howard in 2018, when he confirmed that it would be a single-player game. Three years later, Howard commented that Bethesda had a “one-pager” outline that explained the studio’s plan for the open-world RPG. The next year, he confirmed that it would be releasing after The Elder Scrolls VI. And, from the latest update, it seems that this is still the case.
Earlier this year, Bethesda discussed their current goals, and their plans for the future. The good news is that Fallout 5 was included among these plans. The bad news is that it almost certainly won’t be coming out before 2030.
Bethesda now describes Fallout 5 as a “long-range destination” that fans will just have to be patient for. From a business perspective, this does make sense, as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was a far more successful title than any Fallout game, and it hasn’t received a sequel since it released all the way back in 2011.
There is other news to help keep the mood from getting too dour, however. While Fallout 5 may still be many years away, Bethesda is simultaneously working on multiple other Fallout projects.
For starters, Fallout 76 is getting a new expansion in 2027, Raven Rock, which will serve as a prequel to Fallout 3. Bethesda is also working on remasters of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, although the release dates of these projects are currently unknown.
Many currently expect them to drop in 2027, as it will mark the 30th anniversary of the franchise, and for them to more specifically release on October 23, Fallout Day, during a live event in Washington D.C. If these remasters are anything like the one done for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, then they’ll feel a lot more like full remakes.
Obsidian Entertainment, who previously partnered with Bethesda on New Vegas, are also currently working on their own new Fallout game. Unfortunately, no details on it have been released. What details have been released on is the third season of the Fallout television series, which will be returning in mid-to-late 2027.
