Highlighting the poor state of women’s safety in India, a disturbing case from Uttar Pradesh’s Mohanlalganj area recently came to light and left many shocked. A 65-year-old woman was allegedly raped and murdered. The Lucknow Police have arrested two men in connection with the horrifying case.
According to the police, a complaint was filed on Thursday, September 24, alleging that the accused, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, raped the complainant’s mother and killed her. A case was then registered at the Mohanlalganj Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The arrested accused have been identified as Rajesh alias Guddu and Hariram Rawat.
The accused told the police that they had been drinking alcohol with the woman when an argument broke out. The police said the accused allegedly assaulted the woman after she began abusing them and then raped her. According to the police statement, when the woman started screaming, the accused allegedly beat her, causing her to fall onto the leg of an iron cot.
Responding to the distressing incident, Congress leader Pawan Khera condemned the act and posed questions of the “psyche” of such men.
“Imagine the psyche of men who raped a ’70-year-old’ woman simply because she objected to them drinking near her home. Rape is an act of establishing power – a means of terrorising, humiliating and subjugating another human being,” Khera’s social media post read.
“This rot persists in our society because those in power choose to popularise Savarkar, who explicitly argued for sexual violence as an instrument of political and social revenge,” the post further read.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also responded to the case: “No words”.
In a separate incident from Maharashtra, a self-styled ‘godman’ allegedly raped a teenager on the pretext of ‘fixing’ a ‘dosh’ in her ‘kundali’ in Latur. The man was then arrested by the police, an official told PTI on Thursday, September 24. Reportedly, it was only when the 17-year-old girl got pregnant that her parents found out about the alleged assault.
